where can i go to get training for special education or sped here in the philippines?

any school who offers this?

genx77

the college of education of up-diliman specifically offers that course.

however, before u enter, pls do your homework. check out the curriculum and get feedback from graduate students who are actually enrolled or, if possible those who have shifted from that course to another.

believe me, ull not regret it as long as u prepare for it. also, check the subjects if these really appeal to u.

in the college of home economics, there is also this course called family life and child development. whereas, in ateneo it a specialization in their psychology program..

tandaan.. it's not bec an institution is very well known eh maganda na lahat ng mga programa dito.. ok..

hope that i have helped u in a way..

:D

I am taking up my MA is UP College of Education. They offer Sped both in the undergrad and grad course. UP Dil. is one of the most respected and prestigous schools that offer sped. But there are also different schools specializing in different exceptionalities. DLSU/Miriam is known for its Sign Language Program (for people with hearing disabilities), PNU is known for SPED in Visually challenged people. UP is for those with Behavioral Disorders (Mentally retarded, Autism)

Esprit.. I think St. Joseph College of QC offers SPED program also, for MA. Just check.

More and more teachers are enrolled in SPED because of the fact it is in demand in the US. I have classmates that are OT, PT, Behavioral Therapists, Psychologists who are currently enrolled in MA. :D

You're right, shnicky... *okay* St. Joseph's College of QC also has a MA SpEd program:

MASTER OF ARTS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

AUTISM
MENTAL RETARDATION

and...

GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN AUTISM
GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN AUTISM
GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MENTAL RETARDATION

I'm a psychology graduate and I'm also planning to take M.A. SpEd in June 2006. I still have a lot of time left to do some research on which university to choose.

:hmm: Which school offers the best curriculum for graduate students who want to major/concentrate on behavioral disorders?

I hope Pexers (especially those who are currently taking MA Sped) would share some info/opinion on this. ;)

shnicky
Sep 29, 2005, 04:06 PM
I am not sure if there is a university offering major in behavioral disorder. I have classmates who have trained in the US for that specific major. Check UP or PNU about that. Masaya ang SPED. :D

espritdescalier
Sep 29, 2005, 07:52 PM
I took up 9 units of sped in my undergrad course.

Do you know any sped schools which accept volunteers?
I want to tutor special children or work as a teacher aide.. of course for free. :naughty:
I have a lot of free time in the afternoon.

shnicky
Sep 29, 2005, 08:58 PM
There are a lot of schools who accept volunteer assistance. But I'm not sure what specific school is that. I think some of my classmate are volunteer as of now. Why don't you try the ADHD Society of the Philippines and Autism Society to help you find one. :D They are really active organizations who promote their mission to different schools in the country.

ALso, if you would like to finish your MA early, try DLSU. Sobra bilis lang tapos na MA mo! :D

espritdescalier
Sep 30, 2005, 10:44 AM
Thanks, shnicky. I'll contact those organizations.

And I heard karamihan sa sped professors dun from PNU.

For now, mag-iipon muna ako.. para makapag-full-time student pa next year. *okay*

excellent teachers...good training... ang daming courses apart from the required courses that have been quite useful especially in my practicum now.

How good are the job market and opportunities of Sped graduates in the Philippines?

For Sped graduates: Are you considering working abroad?

Thanks.

:)

samanthababe

very good job opportunities for sped graduates...both here and abroad... you have the option kasi to go homebased or work for a school or put up your own...

18 units of sped and you can already fly to the states or to canada...last i heard $4k daw monthly...

What is American Boards?

American Boards is recognized as the "Alternate Route to Teacher Certification" open to all professionals interested to have a career in teaching. It is an approved provider of teacher certification in the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Through the "Passport to Teaching Certification" program, computer-based assessments of rigorous standards in subject area and professional teaching knowledge are administered to professionals seeking certification. This new approach helps states to effectively identify individuals who are qualified to teach in their classrooms.

Who can take American Boards Passport to Teaching Program?

It is available to fresh-graduates, mid -career changers and teachers seeking certification. Any four-year course is accepted and experience is not a requirement.

Now, both teachers and non-teachers have equal opportunities to landing a teaching job in the US.

We invite you to attend our info-seminar on November 11 at the SM Conference Hall in Cebu and November 12 at the SM Megatrade Conference Hall to get more information about the American Board Passport To Teaching and how you can apply right here in the Philippines. Entrance fee is P100 only.

espritdescalier
Nov 3, 2005, 02:12 AM
Chey28, just call Learning Partners. The last time I inquired (mid-September) they said their Sped Certification program was on-hold.

YaelJamie, REACH's sped program -
21 units for P22k
classes are held every Saturday & Sunday 9am - 5pm
they have a modular program. usually, it may take 3 months to finish it, or longer..depending on your pace, schedule

samanthababe
Nov 3, 2005, 08:48 AM
^i dunno about modular programs...3 months would never be enough..there's just about too many things to learn...

YaelJamie
Nov 3, 2005, 09:33 AM
tnx a lot espritdescalier :) Ok kaya *** sped program ng REACH?! I'm rily interested since malapit *** din sa min.

espritdescalier
Nov 3, 2005, 06:10 PM
I attended REACH's free orientation last June, and these were what I learned:

The administrator & owner, Mrs. Serrano...
-has an MA Sped from UP
-studied Sped because of her special child
-put up her own sped school, Special Care Development Center in Las Pinas
-has been teaching sped for 15 years

REACH is not a placement agency but a travel, immigration consultancy (direct hiring.. meaning you only need about P100k to get a job in the US,Canada, etc. while in placement agencies, you have to pay P300k-above).

I've heard they have helped quite a number of Filipino teachers (especially sped teachers) land jobs in the US.

but it's not that easy. you have to be really good.. since you need to pass the American Boards &/or Praxis, the IELTS, etc.

YaelJamie
Nov 7, 2005, 10:18 AM
Tnx esprit :) Are you going to enroll also at REACH? 100K of expense is much lesser. But I have read also regarding the liveandearnintheuc.com. I'm thinking which is better.

espritdescalier just called LPI naka hold parin yung program nila.. sayang sana yung REACH meron din somwhere in Makati or in QC

YaelJamie
Nov 7, 2005, 04:28 PM
U mean Chey mas ok *** program ng REACH? ***** hindi namn e2 scam....

espritdescalier
Nov 7, 2005, 10:53 PM
I think REACH is legitimate naman. :) I've talked to someone (my seatmate last orientation). She has been teaching sped for 5 yrs in Cavite, and she knows Mrs. Serrano. She used to see her in some sped activities in the South. That seatmate told me she had friends now based in the US, who were helped by REACH.

However, if you want it fast and you have lotsa money, liveandearnintheusa.com or e-world resources is for you. It's a "placement" agency. :naughty:

Also,
Reach's specialty : Sped teachers
liveandlearn's specialty: Subject school teachers (high school esp. math, science)

Mukha bang biased ako for Reach?

PS
I agree w/ samanthababe. To finish Reach's sped program (even if it's modular), 3 months is not enough. 1 year would be better. ...quality than speed... *okay*

liveandearn does not have certificate programs. it's a recruitment agency.

reach is a travel consultancy firm. the owner of reach is also the owner/administrator of a special school (special care center) in las pinas. the sped certificate program is conducted in that school...so you also get some hands-on experience (ala practicum or ojt) w/ special children.

i recommend that you go for a m.a. in sped in universities like up, dlsu, etc. :D
but if you want it fast, enrol at Reach.

fyi po peeps, may entrance exam na po ang UP sped.when i started we just had to maintain a gwa of 1.75 in the first 9 units before they allow us to continue with the program. hindi po kasi biro ang maging sped teacher. kaya po doubtful lang po yung mga short courses.

kabitNIshaider, master's degree? o meron din bachelor's?

YaelJamie, nope. i'll go for a m.a. :) ..because i agree w/ samanthababe, mahirap maging sped teacher.
kung educ lang sana undergrad major ko at may teaching experience na 'ko, siguro enroll ako sa reach. karamihan sa nag-enroll dun, mga teacher na for many years, at gusto nga mag-abroad.

chey28, yung st. joseph's college, may non-thesis option sila (tulad ng dlsu).
sat classes lang meron. mas ok na you visit the school.. so you can ask more about their tuition fee, curriculum, professors, atbp. mag-inquire ka rin sa ibang schools like up,dlsu,st.paul, etc.. then compare & decide *okay*

the way my prof explained it to us, pati dun sa sped school where i go for my practicum they only accept those with either ba or ma in sped... as for certificate holders, regular schools with special ed offering lang ang nagaadmit. but then dapat educ related pa rin yung main course... prolly in the states baka tumanggap sila ng certificate holders. kasi nga may recruiter sa UP, the legendary ligaya, who gets ma students with at least 18 sped units to work abroad. however mas malaki pa rin kita ng graduate. at least $2k ang difference sa starting.

chey28

hi chey...im almost done with my ma. thesis na lang ako this sem...and it's 6 units...39-42 units to finish the course...yung 3 units optional for your electives... you can actually finish the degree in 2 years or prolly 3 sems kung full load ka and masipag ka gumawa ng thesis. ligaya's legit.galit nga lang mga profs sa educ coz andaming di nakakafinish ng ma dahil sa kanya.kumbaga, inaagawan nya ang college ng graduates.
my ma's taken so long though.im on my 4th year kasi 1-2 subjects lang ako per sem, la pa akong summer kasi walang summer classes ang mga majors. i cant go full time cuz im working. i highly recommend po ang sped program ng peyups.

mag-inquire ka na lang directly sa college (about sa requirements, admission test, interview, deadline of application, etc.) ;)

Trimestral and you can go full time. Many courses are offered every term. Prof came from UP and PNU. General SPED ang approach nila, no specific exceptionality like PNU.

hello. i need some advice. i want take masters in sped because aside from the fact that i am required to have my masters degree in my work right now( i only have 4 sems and 2 summers to go huhuhu), i really like to specialize in special education. i have some exposures already beacuse i am a physical therapist and i won't deny the fact that this is also a good opportunity for me to work in other countries. now my dilemma is choosing the school and of course financial reasons (ako lang magpa-aral sa sarili ko). i have 4 choices lang because i don't have any education units. and only these schools are offering sped to individuals like me who doesn't have educ units. by the way is there really a difference between masters in educ major in sped and just plain masters in sped. and what is the advantage of a thesis program over a non-thesis one.
UP
but the problem is they don't have majors in summer term and the classes in regular sem coincides with my working hours.

St. Joseph college in QC
they are offering masters in sped. ok ba na school to?

MLQU
they have this modular program, i think. do u think a modular program is good for sped.

DLSU
the schedule is great but the problem is the very high tuition fees. i heard they have this scholarship but i doubt it cause i got my bachelors from a private institution. is there anyone here who did apply for a scholarship in this school and what is the result?

thanks so much. your reply will be highly appreciated. :D

hello!

i'm also planning to take up sped this may or june but i don't know which school to choose...

just enquired at centro escolar university and found out that they offer 19 units for SPED, every saturday lang ang pasok...enough na ba ang ganitong number of units?

hope to get a reply..thanks a lot!

hi peeps...kung hei fat choi, btw...

@frederick: with regards to the sked of classes, have you checked the sked?well they made sure na this will not be in conflict with work.kaya may super late classes sya. hanggang 830 mga classes. saturday classes puno yun.as early as 830a to 830p.

i took up broadcasting as my undergrad course.as for the difference, i believe it all boils down to the curriculum. i think it would be best to get hold of the curriculum of each of the schools you're interested in and try to compare. in UP kasi, about 12 units of free elective are available.meaning, you can choose to concentrate on a specific exceptionality if you want.like you can take more units for the gifted or for a specific mental disorder. or pwede rin ibalance mo yan.

in essence, the best pa rin UP kasi you'll get your money's worth.pinakamurang tuition for real quality education.maganda talaga ang training since super okey ang mga professors.

Another question, what's the next best sped school after UP?

Hmm.. As far as I know, you have to have an undergraduate degree before you can take the ma for sped. Also, if you want to go for an MA in SPED, you should have taken at least 24 education units. This is the TCP (Teacher Certification Program) that different teacher training institution provide.

hi shnicky...

fyi po...you dont have to have an undergrad degree in sped to get an MA in sped..i am a living breathing example..as ive mentioned earlier, i took up broadcasting...

uhmmm, i didnt quite get what you were saying about the education units...as far as i know and experienced,if you're planning to take the teacher's licensure examination PRC requires you to have at least 18 education units. ...tcp in UP and most other teacher training schools offer you this. sa UP kasi they only offer undergrad units for this, so educ 100 and so on ...if you decide to take the masters program, you have to reenroll and take educ 201 up...hope that helps...

Hey peeps!

I've been reading this thread and I've some questions. For those in the know, I do hope you share your thoughts and insights. Thanks so much.

1. How in-demand is the SPED teacher? Is it almost the same as the demand for nurses and caregivers?

2. What are the academic qualifications to be able to land a job as a SPED teacher abroad (preferably in the US)? Is a certificate program enough?

3. Do prospective employers require relevant work experience for SPED teacher-applicants? If so, how many years would that be?

4. Granted that I have satisfied all th requirements, how and where do I apply?

shnicky
Sep 2, 2006, 10:32 AM
@ DPHX
1. SPEd teachers are VEry in demand in the US. Not as many as the nurses.
2. Academic Qualifications usually, you have MA units (at east 24) or graduate with student-teaching experience. At least 2 to 3 years teaching experience. Passed the local board exams for teachers. Certificate program, that would depend on your employer, i would recommend taking up MA than certificate.
3. See number 2.
4. You apply at agency who needs SPED teachers in the US. They are a lot. Just choose one that is recognized by POEA.
Good Luck!

hi guys,

I'm glad I've found this thread. Interested din kc akong mag SPED next year.

*** pong nakaenrol ngayon sa cert programs or BS/MA?

Sino pong nagm-MA in SPED ngayon sa UP diliman? wala bang MRR pag MA?

wala bang fly now pay later na plan?

Hi! I have been attending grad school at St Joseph QC-MA-SPED for 2 sems..so far the quality of teaching there is excellent..(though some profs are not that good...i mean average typebut most are good). I am a second courser too (BSBA-Marketing)just like many, most of my classmates are long time teachers, deans, lawyers, bankers and others..all wanted to work abroad seeking for a greener pasteur. My senior colleague had finished MA also at st joseph for 3 yrs, acquired a yr of teaching experience here, she left4 months ago to teach in Maryland for 3500 dollars/month. She applied for an agency here(arrowhead) and paid i think half a million for her papers and everything. She passed and now having the time of her life over there. OHA!

Antagal naman... 3 years?

If 9 units per term, tapos yan in 4 terms in DLSU. (1 year 4 months)

That's an MA ha.

3500 is too low. SPED teachers earn around 50-70k a year.

Hello! :) I'm a fresh nursing grad but I always had an interest in teaching coming from a family of teachers. I am planning to take up sped as my second course. Hope somebody here can answer my questions.

1. I read that instead of 18 education units, it has been changed to 30 units. How long will that be if I will be a full time student? How many years?

2. Is anybody here studying in PNU? Because I am from Cavite so PNU is the most convenient school for me.
The question is, will PNU's tuition fee per semester exceed 10,000 pesos? I am planning to finance my own studies since I know my parents has spent so much on my nursing education. Currently, I have a homebased job and during the school year, I plan to have part-time work online again.

Hope you will help me.Thanks again and Happy Easter to all! ^__^
