How about an EB for Business and Careers? Since we're talking about these matters, make it a kapihan or similar, invite speakers... ?

emilie
Aug 21, 2000, 12:56 AM
How about having Pex Seminars or Talks? Don't know if we should have a charge or it will be free. But this could also be a venue for networking, and of course, it will expand our learning of various topics.

I'm game. Just let me know when.

planetary
Aug 21, 2000, 10:52 AM
Hmmm...what will we talk about?

planetary
Aug 21, 2000, 03:22 PM
Maybe everyone who's interested could start with some sort of informal gathering so that we could get organized

zimdude
Aug 21, 2000, 03:55 PM
yeah we should meet on this. I'm not sure if I can meet soon since I might be leaving this Sunday. Saturday morning? (Afternoon - book club, kung tuloy?)

PauTOT

interesting....something worthwhile for a change, count me in! wala ako ma contribute since wala ako place, wala pa rin ako masyado experience since i've only been working for 2 years, pero I'd love to learn from you guys.

zimdude
Aug 22, 2000, 12:25 AM
Thanks for the ideas... I agree, before any formalities we should organize the "core group"... in reference to TNT's suggestions, this could also be for tech stuff... basta "serious" EB in the mold of the Written Word Book Club, as compared to the usual pangkatuwaan EB's.

Aug 22, 2000, 01:42 AM
Hi.. I'll just share some of what I've seen and have done before.

Instead of formally organizing such, why not do regular schmoozes at some place where you guys can hang-out? .. like in a hole-in-a-wall chinese restaurant, or some bar with nice slow music with lots of BEER! FYI a lot of start-ups in the 'Valley started out like this..

i think it will also help to have an agenda set for each meeting -- be it just an informal get-together, or a more formal encouter -- so we know what to expect, we are prepared when we get there, and there's a lot less chance of feeling like it was a waste of time. i'm sure most of us lead busy lives, so let's make the potential of something like this have some substantial output.

but i think it's a good idea to just meet up informally at first -- to schmooze as mamangbumbero put it -- networking is always key anyway.

Alright let's bash out an agenda... like a "roundtable" discussion of issues that we want discussed, and to take it forward, something we can take action on.

My interest would be in IT, ISP, New Economy issues. I can bring friends in this field.

makiling
Aug 22, 2000, 04:21 PM
Second the motion on NEW ECONOMY topic .....any suggested date and time??? I suggest makati.

zimdude
Aug 23, 2000, 05:59 PM
Alright, makiling, your wish is my demand ;)

Let's have something on Monday 6PM here in Makati?

Everyone's invited, including the ph-cyberview crowd like before. So bring your friends, officemates, etc.

Agenda is to bash out the topics and setup for our formal meeting/seminar some time in the future.

For folks who want somewhere else like Ortigas Center, I'll make time for that too :)

I'm into new technologies, computer stuff.

I like the idea of gathering networks... so looking forward to it.

Guys, I suggest that you start a mailing list, just like the photo and the book clubs. I'm the official rep of the mods to the clubs so if you guys need anything, just let me know.

PauTOT
Aug 24, 2000, 06:41 AM
I agree with CaRaMBa on the mailing list idea. It would be very convenient for people like me who don't have enough time to browse through Pex everyday just to see if there are news and updates about the business club.

zimdude
Aug 25, 2000, 08:24 PM
Hmm sorry for the late reply, work na naman :)

I suggest we use ph-ebiz@egroups.com or http://www.egroups.com/group/ph-ebiz since it's underused?

So, can we meet Monday at 6PM, in Makati? I'll just be around...

we can use each other's emails in our profile for any updates...

basta email nyo ako for any developments...

if we use the ph-ebiz egroup, that's already assuming that this business club will only have to do with IT and e-commerce.

Hey tuloy na! Monday 6PM is it. I'm bringing along some people here.

I don't think it's appropriate for me to create a mailing list with PEx in it.
Maybe we can discuss that there?

Thanks for the interest.

zimbdude, i think the other people are only using their PCs in the office. will u take care of informing everyone, cos this will already be on monday!

does the moderator know?

is it settled that we will meet at the Food Court, 3th floor Enterprise bldg? does everyone know where this is?

Sorry sorry I've been so busy... so who were there? Me and Orion, then I invited Gail Medrano of Actibiz, and her brother came; then there were our business-minded PEx bosses Kaboom, Mikoid and Nix.

Since we were just hanging out, we didn't talk about anything substantial, and not all about business either :)

Anyway since we had a fairly good time with even just a little group, I look forward to the next one; some people I invited couldn't come and failed to invite some people too...

what kind of networking? the multi-level marketing kind of networking or the networking of computers?
if it's the latter then i'm interested. ortigas would be a great place especially if its on a weekday.

please post it here if the plan pushes through

neither. networking as in meeting people and making them meet each other. one of my favorite pastimes ;)
having EB's for business. :D

well I met some PExers today - work related - and it really looks good to have another Makati EB. for the Ortigas people, well I won't be able to organize that, since I'm a Legaspi villager.

hey zimdude! :D

how do you receive funds from abroad? hehehe.. sorry off-topic pa? I've got clients in Canada, and I need a way for them to wire me funds..

is there a way I could set up an account through the net, without paperwork (preferable) and still be able to receive the funds here in Manila?

Citibank needs a min. daily balance of a $1,000.. yikes!

thanks, man ;)

makiling
Oct 6, 2000, 12:56 AM
why dont u open an ordinary dollar savings account for example in bpi family bank then have them wire the amount to that dollar account. maintaining balance for an ordinary savings account is lower than that with checking account.

Too busy to set up a real meeting this week, and I'll gone the next... though a simple lunch out would be fine :) I have some ideas for a formal meeting with presentations and the like.

A potential participant mentioned that this Business Club seems to be oriented towards IT... and I would agree, with me proposing it and being in the IT biz it can't be helped. Therefore, it needs to be balanced out.

zimdude
Oct 22, 2000, 12:59 PM
Hmm I'm back in local circulation and I think I won't be going out of the country for a while. So wanna have it na?

I think the main topic for discussion would be how to attract more business-minded members, guided by the stuff in the "spinning off" thread.

Shall we, then?

zimdude
Nov 20, 2001, 02:44 AM
Bringing back this old thread... since PEx Clubs are getting active, and so are TWF EB's... would anyone be interested in the "official" PEx Business Club?

zimdude
Nov 21, 2001, 08:26 PM
It's worth a repost! So let's do it. I can do #1 especially on the IT business. I can also look for speakers for #2.

----------------

Talks and seminars

I like the idea of having talks or seminars on popular topics posted in the Working Filipino.

What do we want to do? We could target either:

1. PEx regulars. Have round-table discussions -- thought-stimulating, productive discussions on Philippine business. Encourage regulars (particularly those with experience to share) to post more.

2. PEx newbies. Have general info seminars for a broad audience to introduce them to the Working Filipino forum. Say, an IT career fair or 'introduction to business' talks.

Possible topics and suggested speakers based on PEx threads:

* Presentation skills or direct sales, by ATICUS

* Personal finance by KUYA DANNY

* Career talks and Q&A by company reps (P&G, Trend Micro, Accenture, Intel, call center companies)

* Job search tips and recruiting tips, by WORKAHOLIC

* Ask the Legal Beagles, by GREEN GRIN

* starting / managing your own business

* balancing work and personal life (tips! )

* interviewing tips & Q&A

* BoF sessions on special topics

* panel discussions: corporate or entrepreneur? Fortune 500 or start-up?

* opportunities for volunteer work

* women in business

* meet the moderators

* e-commerce in the philippines

and lots more. We can pick 1 or 2 to start with and do the rest later if the talks prove popular.

We could hold it on a Saturday afternoon, keep it simple so we don't have to hunt for sponsors?

Ching

The volunteer club is popular because it's simple enough to do given the time and commitment. This, on the other hand, needs a little more thought put into it. That's why I asked this thread to be put on top - so I could solicit your ideas!

I'm also waiting for inputs from nix, who thought of this in the first place!

Krakista

Four ways of growing a business: Sell more of the same products to the same customers.
Sell new, additional products to the same customers.
Sell the same products to new customers.
Sell new, additional products to new customers.
The first thing I would ask before joining a Business Club is What's in it for me? The ideas you've presented so far are good and I've got some additional ideas and it's more of getting really into business. I see a business club as a channel for networking and growing a business as outlined above. Business is all about serving customers at a profit. We can have a session where club members can present their portfolio of products and services to each other initially just for promotion. It's just to know what products and services are available and eventually some members could lead other members to new customers. What do you think?

leelayce
Nov 24, 2001, 09:13 PM
If ever this pushes through and hopefully be formalized and officially be one. . . . .

I can help by going around serving you drinks during breaks and in between serious discussions, pa-cute sessions, product presentations, while dancing to the tune of . . . shake your bon bon. .. by Ricky Martin.

. . . . . . . . for a more stimulating, appetizing , encouraging, and productive session worth your time. :rotfl:

Krakista, your idea is like the "networking nights" events. I haven't been to one though. I hope there are enough entrepreneurs or executives here to make this useful - I think employees would find career development a better fit for their needs.

I'm Willowdan and I'm new here. I believe you guys all know each other. I'm a Netizen like you and an e-trepreneur(still a neophyte).

I just wonder if you may be interested in an SMS/Txt Biz. I'm just starting the networking.

Sorry if I seem to be too young.

Let me know if I can post a survey in this forum regarding my Biz.

Thanks,
Willowdan

hey thanks for posting your thoughts!
well, whether it will be open to the public (as in non PEx members) would depend on what we come up with.

for meeting over coffee/drinks, well it could start like that.
if you want, we could meet somewhere so we can make the plans.

this is different from the The Working Filipino EB since that is more for, well, hanging out!

Thanks for the enthusiasm. I've been catching up with work stuff and my other orgs so I haven't been too active in PEx.

OK let's set the date... what do you think of, between Christmas and New Year? That's always a slow time for work, unless if you're in a bank or somesuch. :D

Lots of quiet spots in Legaspi and Salcedo Village. The place right beside my office is quiet and cozy, and if you want a "serious" meeting we could my office conference room.

I'm OK with that venue - as long as it generates new business for the company. :glee:

Seriously, it's OK for there, unless you want a casual venue.

Let's bash out the agenda. So far, the main threads for the Business Club would be:
1. Business/People Networking
2. Skills development/training
3. Projects to implement the above
4. What's the right name for the Club (given "Business" is generic.)

Club Name

"Monkey Business?"

Based on famous business people or business-related Filipino History

(e.g. sino ang ingat-yaman ng Katipunan?)

Club Purpose

Educate, make use of opportunities, along the lines of "open source."

People "Networking" Get-together/Project

Presentation with brochures?

It may be hard to initiate unless the people are "salesmen."

Location? Should be a semi-private place like closing down an "independent"

coffee place, or something like a condo penthouse.

Format? Present about themselves, and their company?

How about "20 questions" that everyone should answer? And it shouldn't take

too long.

How to get people to present? (Need ideas from PExers).

Avoid being a blatant salesman (e.g. PExers who post on business opportunities)

"Why are you presenting this idea?"

How about "getting to know you" game with business-related questions.

(e.g. who works for company X).

We want diverse attendance but cater to Working Filipino members who want

a "serious" get-together as a contrast to the "fun" EB's, and contribute.

We are looking for "entrepreneurial" PExers but not necessarily those who

are working as entrepreneurs.

We are looking for "entrepreneurial" PExers but not necessarily those who

are working as entrepreneuers.

Talks

We will start the talks on developing skills. We should have at least two:

one on soft/general skills, and one on specific businesses and opportunities.

For the latter, we already have a talk on how to get into independent IT

consulting. (Which should also attract Technology Today members).

My Second Job

The get-together can also launch the "My Second Job" project which is for

people looking for consultancy work/moonlighting and those who want to

contract them. We can "lock into" this audience specifically.

We should ask those who landed contracts from this to give a certain percentage

to the Club so that the club can remain self-sustaining and independent.

Talent Pool

Another way of looking at the Club is as a Talent Pool for those who need

projects done for a short period of time. (e.g. a rush project for a

Japanese client - who can do a presentation in Japanese?) For this, the Club

can adopt a common identity and have something in common such as a business

card.

Further Communication

Mailing list?

Private messages?

Action Items

Need comments from the other PExers.

Need more people at the meeting, and coordinate on the other potential

projects.

The "My Second Job" project looks like a viable and interesting one. This is how I perceive the concept, we need members from different industries that would create a "talent pool" and then establish a consultancy group? The sucess of this would really depend on how committed the members are, most especially when it comes to allotting time for the club... :beam:
I am in a service-oriented industry and have been to sales&marketing also... I hope I can share something to this group, that could help establish the club! Looking forward to the Part II...

Wishing everyone a Prosperous & Peaceful New Year! *party*

It is impossible for me to participate and attend meetings in the Phils.

I am offering however my expertise to help your club.

I can see myself in you when my classmates and I started the consultancy business right after we finished our masteral...

It was a short-lived venture though because two of us have to go abroad.

Here in the States, I brought that entrepreneurial spirit...Together with my classmates whom I met here in the US...we started a corporation....

I can help you in marketing....marketing plan, marketing strategies..pricing strategies...etc...

I can also help you evaluate the feasibility and viability of the project...

:beam: Cheers! 2u Garfield M, we need volunteers like you to make this happen!

Zimdude : I think we need to establish first the "core group" who'd meet on a regular basis to "set up" the club, more solid ideas would come out if members would "brain storm". It's easier to coordinate the time availability of fewer members, right? More pexers would be interested to join if objectives are set na!:p
[just a thought]

Happy New Year 2 All!!!

Thanks in advance for the help, GARFIELD M !

Actually. contributing requires as little as spending time to attend meetings and share your insights. We don't cater to those with specialized needs or industries - those have their own orgs already!

As for the core group, since we are just starting up we haven't defined "core"-ness yet, but I feel it would be a function of who has the time to spare and the interest to commit to this. If the stuff we posted above from the meeting isn't enough to give a clear idea, we could discuss further here online so that we can have a smoother discussion in the next face-to-face meeting.

Hey everyone's welcome to join and attend meetings... well no next meeting yet. I think a good time and venue for a meeting would be when something significant pops up. But if our ideas here reach a critical mass, then let's meet to speed it up!

About the identity:
that will derive from what we agree upon to be the VMO, values, and strategy of the club. Tell us what you think of the minutes and I'm sure you'll have some more ideas that we haven't thought of.

About the Freelance Job Board:
I think that our project will build upon boards which are just "anonymous" want ads... since we have a Club we'll have relationships formed and we'll know each other well enough to make referrals.

About the specific businesses:
It would be great to have agriculture/forestry knowhow onboard since all we have so far are "urban" professions. In the hype about IT and stuff our country's ability in the agri sector are overlooked especially by people in PEx (and by myself!).

Lucien :
That's a neat survey! But for maximum impact here on PEx, I suggest you search for a thread about journalists or journalism, and if none are appropriate, you start a new thread with a catchy title like "Why don't businessmen tell journalists everything."

Well me, I won't say anything that will be grist for the rumor mill like stuff about details of confidential stuff we're working on, or projects that are still in the works especially things like acquisitions.

What's the name of your org, or are you in the college paper?

Lucien,

Hope I'll be able to help. Just by way of background, I've spent a few years in PR and have had some experience with journalists interviewing businessmen.

One thing that businessmen, particularly those who work for corporations, should keep in mind that when they address journalists, they are representing their company; hence, comments that may be perceived as company opinions or statements of fact are very delicately handled. A number of businessmen will therefore tend to shy away from speculation in general.

There are also those who will tend to be very careful about divulging financial conditions, particularly since these impact a number of their stakeholders - some figures may actually be misinterpreted or used out of context.

And of course, businessmen will also tend to avoid talking about things that are considered confidential and for internal use only, such as product development updates, compensation and benefits, sales strategies.

In short, a good businessman will try to steer an interview towards his communication goals: what does he want to tell the journalists' readers, or his competion through the piece that will be written? Anything that is extraneous to that, he will do well to avoid.

That being said, it would take a well-read, well-researched, well-informed, tactful, considerate, cunning and patient journalist to ask the right questions on and around the issue he would want the businessman to comment on.

And there lies the magic of a great interview - when two competent minds are engaged in cerebral swordplay, skirting issues, parrying comments and pushing each other's right buttons to achieve an objective.

Sadly, while there are some journalists that I look up to and admire, there are too many out there who have yet to look beyond a press release, and find out what it really is trying to say - or trying to avoid comment on.

Good luck to you. I hope you turn out to be a great journalist. It is too important a job to be left to the mediocre.

let's set our next meeting within February.
some friends have expressed interest in the "Second Job" project and I'm also thinking if it could be viable as a directory for freelancers and other people already in the contract work business.

take your pick: Saturdays? Feb 2, 16, 23? (9 is busy already.) Or weekdays? Do you want a conference room-type venue again? If yes, who can provide one? If no, it should still be conducive to serious discussion.

First, if you want a casual meeting - not serious talk just yet - do join the Technology Today EB (http://www.pinoyexchange.com/forums/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=77273)! It's being planned for dinner this Friday at Don Henricos in Glorietta.
We're now expanding it to cover the Business Club and other activities.

Second, I'm thinking of how the Business Club can help the Outreach/Volunteers Club. For example, the Business Club can manage fund-raising or awareness-building activities, as an exercise in our business skills. What do you think? Let's get those heads thinking!! :D

Not only will you meet several kind hearted PExers (naks!), you'd also be able to reach out to the Filipino community in need.

For the yuppies, guys and girls, this'll be a really good outlet for you guys to release tension from the office (in a positive way). Very worthwhile, right?

 nice meeting you last night, orcom_dude! that was my first in-real-life meeting for the Volunteers.

I hardly did PEx the past few days so I didn't promote the meeting later, but it's pushing through. Anyone in the area is free to drop by and say hi! You can contact me at 0916-423-7922.

We had an interesting discussion last night after the meeting at the PEx, Inc. office, and we now have a concrete idea for pushing for funding for the orgs. Here are the points:

Business Club (BC) members will have the chance to practice managing/investing O.P.M. (Other People's Money).

This will be strictly NOT for profit and will support the PEx Clubs and other non-commercial activities.

An org/group can either propose a project from the BC, or make a request for funding or even a loan - once the BC has funds.

Therefore, the BC has to raise funds for its own internal use and for funding projects.

I already have an idea for raising a small amount of money by selling prepaid cards. I have a stock here which I bought against my salary at a 50% off during December. We can resell that and give the proceeds to the BC or for projects.

Now for the open questions:

The project/group dealing with money would need a formal structure and accountable officers. This may be the same or a subset of the BC.
This will need formal SEC registration, and maybe BIR and the like?

Hope you can give this some thought in preparation for our next formal meeting... though we can talk about this later.

I hope this interests people who want to have real experience of running a business.

Hi rins! thanks for the interest!

For everyone, since we're in the starting phases, we're getting anyone and everyone who's interested along the same lines and committed to put time and resources (like capital, skills, connections...) to our projects. If there's a possible business-related project that we could work on, do tell us here in the thread, or at our face-to-face meeting!

This is not only for professionals and working people, but also for students who want to gain relevant experience without taking the entrepreneurial or employed plunge.

I'll be at the Arts and Lit Night tonight at Gulod in UP, so we can talk about the Business Club there too... :D

zimdude,
been following this thread intently.
i can volunteer connections to a progressive VC looking for
ICT related businesses to fund

however as a VC he has to see a profit :wiseguy:

but maybe what the biz club can do is keep its share of
profits to be made and use it for non profit purposes

this invite is also open to those who have ICT-related biz plans and have potential entrepreneurial qualities and aspirations . serious inquiries may PM me.

tip:
this VC hates the word incubator so dont use it in your proposals.

Thanks for the info roxyd3428! Well the Business Club itself isn't that serious yet to commit to a VC, but some of the members may be interested. When we get around to holding an event, can we make an invitation for the VC to present?

roxyd3428
Jan 22, 2002, 06:07 AM
sure - ill probably do the presentation since im the VC rep.

Note that this open to everyone, PExer or non-PExer, so tell your business-minded friends/co-workers/colleagues/business partners!

Please send a PM or text message to me if you are interested in meeting in the Ortigas Center area, the night of Friday, February 22. Please give me your contact details (email, mobile number, landline). Let's get this going guys!! :bounce:

Please also give me the contact info of your non-PExer friends.

Migs why not come up with a final list of attendees, first, then determine what venue's big enough to pack in the whole group?

We don't want a repeat of the first PEx Booksale wherein the place became almost too crowded, right?

Or, you can choose to determine the venue, offhand, but shortlist the number of attendees to suit the venue's allowable capacity.

You can shortlist based on "first-come-first-served" principle.

The e-mail strategy sounds good for purposes of registration and final confirmation.

What do you think? Cheers!

Many thanks.

zimdude
Feb 5, 2002, 09:58 PM
 thanks to those who've confirmed, I have 7 already...

for the agenda, first and foremost it's "getting to know you" and setting the goals and expectations for the club. as you can see from the thread, there are a whole lot of ideas already, and you guys definitely have more, so we need to determine which things do we do first.

oh, and by the way, I'm not heading the club (which does not exist as a club yet), just "convening" it...

Rest in peace, Syoti21.

All set for Friday! I sent email to those I have addresses for, and PM'd the rest. This is what I said:

Hi,

Just a reminder that the PEx Business Club is pushing through this

Friday, February 22, 2002, 7:00PM at the Struan's and Tang's tea house,

Ortigas Center branch (behind El Pueblo).

The agenda is a real-life discussion and agenda formation for what

the club will do, looking into the possibility of the different projects

discussed (i.e. freelancer's directory, startup businesses, helping the

other PEx clubs through project management and fund raising), and plain

and simple people-networking.

Please bring your ideas, notepads and writing instruments, and your friends -

all are welcome here, even non-PEx members.

For updates, my contact number is 0916-4237922.

See you!
