I just bought her CD last night on a whim. After listening to the first track "Don't Know Why", I knew I just had to buy the album.

From Amazon.com: It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending intimations of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Anyway you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic, "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD.

Basta when you pass by a record store, listen to her CD and judge for yourself. I dont know but in some of the tracks, she kinda sounds like Ricky Lee Jones. Not that they have the same voice but more of the style of the songs.

raven23
Glad you liked it too. Galing ng "Dont Know Why" no? I also like "Seven Years" . A part of the refrain reminds me of an Eagle Eye Cherry song "Promises Made".

First time I heard her song Don't KNow Why, I thought it was Allana Davis singing. I liked the song instantly and started downloading all her songs.

Did you know that she is the daughter of the famous Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan?

She is the aural equivalent of a finely brewed cappuccino...

Correction...her dad's Ravi Shankar (which must account for her exotic looks)

first heard about her through triglyceride here after she fronted for john mayer at the fillmore last april. (gollum: i think this is what you were talking about).

i was a bit skeptical about her when i first listened to samples of her songs online...pero she's not bad pala. bluesy but not boring...

listened to her album in music one a couple of weeks later...and i liked it! gollum, remember when we saw the video for one of her songs? remember how excited i was tapos you were making fun of the video kasi walang budget? ang sama mo! :rolleyes: pero ate weng likes her too. pinakinggan naman niya yung album sa tower and she wanted to buy it right then and there!

although i like her, andami ko pang naka-lineup na bibilhing cds before i get around to buying come away with me...

There's a Norah Jones article in the latest issue of Rolling Stone (the one with Eminem on the cover).....very interesting...

here's what she has to say about her dad Ravi Shankar:

..another mark of her birth, that still troubles her greatly. Her father happens t be sitar King Ravi Shankar. Her mother and Shankar were only together briefly, and for the first nine years of er life, Jones saw him only bout nine times; then ten years went by with no contact. More recently, the two have been in touch, but she still doesn't like talking about him.

I don't like talking about him because he doesn't have anything to do with me or my music

Gollum, I think you might like this next one, it's about her video :glee:

.....backstage, seeming stressed out , she spoke at length to her tour manager about the demands being made on her. " I've given in to everything the record company has asked for, even the dumb-***, really bad video," Jones said ( LOL. ) " Then people told me this was going to be a European tour, but I get here and it's all mostly press.So then I'm a pain in the *** and sy, ' No, I'm not doing it, no way'; but ten minutes later, they've convinced me to f*cking do it."

Jones reaction when the host of a popular Amsterdam tv show host introduced her as Ravi Shankar's daughter:

....the host introduced her as as Shankar's daughter, even though he had ben asked not to because it would upset Jones. And it did. SItting at her piano, she looked wilted and hurt.

Afterwards, she was able to stifle her tears but not her feelings.

" That was not cool", she said to her Dutch rep. " It's just, like, f*ck, if I had a good relationship with my dad, fine. But you know what? That's my f*cking one thing! My one thing! I almost got up and walked off. You saw my face. I don't even want to be on a goddamn national tv show if tha's how it's going to be; I just don't.Maybe it's childish, but it's my life."

hot and cold:

suddenly she spun around and faced us (rolling stone people).
"Don't you have enough et?" she shouted in our direction. " Haven't we given you enough?"

We blanched, fearing more and worse, but Jones was only kidding. In fac, she was laughing, and soon we were laughing too.

..angry one minute, full of humor the next....

ganda ng boses nya...her sound's very unique, and i have to hand it to her kasi she's young and she's not your typical teeny bopper singer. most people appreciate her for her music and not the other "goods" that she has(coz she's definitely pretty).

before i have completely no interest on jazz music. the first thing that used to come out of my mind upon hearing the word "jazz" is "SAXOPHONE". HOWEVER, after listening to just sample audios of Norah's music, i suddenly gained A LOT of interest in this genre! i downloaded her songs and a couple of other jazz music. i even checked out jazz websites like allaboutjazz.com. i was even surprised to know that one of my favorite female vocalists patti austin sings jazz too. anyway, i guess i owe Norah a lot for introducing me to the wonderful music that is called JAZZ!

I've tried so hard, my dear, to show that you're my every dream
Yet you're afraid each thing I do is just some evil scheme
A memory from your lonesome past keeps us so far apart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart?

Another love before my time made your heart sad and blue
And so my heart is payin' for things I didn't do
In anger, unkind words I say that make the teardrops start
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart?

Another love before my time made your heart sad and blue
And now I know your heart is shackled to a memory
The more I learn to care for you, the more we drift apart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart?

see... iwas right... her video sucks. even she had to admit to it.

but her music, however, is a different matter.

i FINALLY bought my own copy of [I]come away with me[I].

she has this really soothing voice that i love to listen to as i fall asleep.

she's one awesome songwriter.

i like her renditions of cold, cold heart and the nearness of you. she retained the melodies of the original, but she added intricacies of her own.

her music is, simultaneously, jazz, country, pop, rock, with a touch of world music (perhaps she got it from her dad).

i also loved lonestar, because of it's country, jazzy fusion. very peculiar.

but the one track that really stood out for me was the title track, come away with me.

for some reason, it got to me. when i first listened to it, i almost cried. ewan ko. the way she sung her piece was so... sincere, i couldn't help but think that she was singing it for me.

gosh. i have to go out more.

so this is the old thread... i posted a new norah jones thread, not knowing that there was an existing one already, silly me:)

anyway, i love norah jones! come away with is my fave, by far. haven't gotten around to buying the whole album though.

i was actually planning to put together a cd with norah-type music, yung medyo jazzy. i haven't completed the playlist but i have in mind a few songs already (diana krall, sting, george benson, matt damon's my funny valentine from the talented mr. ripley soundtrack, etc.) if you can think of any other songs that would fit, let me know. --> sorry off-topic!

Grace - is she releasing a live cd? :confused:

Alice Music Vol. 6(?)

featuring Norah Jones live at the Alice Lounge - :up: I got a copy, it's a compilation cd actually with Creed, Wilco, Coldplay, Alanis, BNL etc...

Starbucks

I saw that one of their CDs has Norah Jones in it, and it's not a song from her album Come Away with me.

Norah goes to Vanity Fair

check out the November issue - the one with Gwen, J-lo, Sheryl Crow and Alicia keys on the cover..it's a gatefold cover and next to Alicia...Norah Jones. You can't see her at the front cover. There's also an article about her inside.

Women in Rock, Rolling Stone, from rollingstone.com

~~~
Norah Jones
She sings ballads. Loves jazz. And doesn't want to be famous. She's the untrendiest new star of 2002
In the age of Pink and Avril Lavigne, there's no good reason for Norah Jones to have a gold record. She's a pop vocalist and pianist who sings ballads and has no connection to trends of the moment. Yet her debut, Come Away With Me, is the surprise word-of-mouth success of the year. A native Texan, Jones was discovered after moving to New York, where she spent her late-teen years providing unobtrusive background music at various Italian restaurants. Raised by a single mom, Jones never knew her famous father, the legendary Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar, and she doesn't like to discuss him in interviews. She doesn't, truth be told, like interviews at all. Working on a plate of takeout Thai food, Jones constantly pauses to ask if she's rambling. Though informed, repeatedly, that she's not, she seems skeptical and continues reluctantly.
Who were your influences growing up?
I started listening to my mom's Etta James and Aretha Franklin records in fifth grade. Joni Mitchell, but not until college. Billie Holiday in high school. In high school you wanna be depressed -- you're moody.
So you didn't try to find music to piss off your parents?
No, my mom had cool music. I guess Nirvana was the only thing she didn't like, just because it was loud.
Was it harder to find female jazz musicians to look up to?
There are a lot of great female jazz musicians, but they're harder to find. Especially nonsingers.
Tell me about your first gigs.
I did jazz standards at a restaurant. The crowd-pleasers were always Sinatra songs. The only one I wouldn't do was "My Way." It sounds beautiful when Sinatra sings it, but I'm gonna sound like an idiot: "I did it my way. . . ." I'm twenty years old! I can't even drink yet! I didn't have the balls to sing that.
Who do you admire now?
Gillian Welch. Alison Krauss. Alicia Keys is really cool.
Any thoughts on Britney Spears and other girl-pop singers?
She came out when I was in college, and I was a little bit disgusted. I remember seeing pictures of her when she was, like, fifteen, and they were pornographic. That really disturbed me. Back then, I didn't know anything about the music industry. All I knew was that I liked Billie Holiday and I was gonna be a jazz pianist and a singer, damn it! I was a total nerd. Now, I mean, I don't listen to that kind of music, but I don't have a problem with it. She's grown up now, she can do what she wants.
As a crossover jazz artist, have you had to do any weird marketing stuff?
When I first hooked up with Blue Note, I was worried that jazz purists would totally slam me, because it's not a jazz record at all. I know that. They know that. But I didn't want to be on a pop label, because I know what comes with that. I didn't want to make videos. I didn't want to be expected to sell millions of records. I didn't ever want to be a celebrity. If I did, I sure as hell wouldn't have signed with Blue Note. Not that I had any other offers. But I would have tried.
Anything you've refused to do?
No [sighs]. They've pretty much convinced me to do a lot of things I didn't really want to. I did a video. Now they want me to remake it. They want it bigger and better! I don't get it. I didn't want to be in it at all. I wanted it to be like a Gorillaz thing, with animation.
It has to be a conflict, because you want people to hear your record.
Yeah, but to be honest? More people have heard my album than I've ever dreamed of, so it's like, "Whoa! Stop the presses! We're cool. Dude, that's enough." Seriously. I made it a year and a half ago. I'm so sick of it. I mean, I'm proud of it. But I'm totally sick of it. I wanna see an end to this record. I know it'll all be over in five years, and I'll be like, "Hey! Remember me?" So I'm not complaining. But I really did not sign up for this. I wanted some part of it. But I didn't want all the work that goes along with it.
Norah Jones will perform "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" on a one hour special tribute on Elvis for NBC TV. The show is tentatively entitled "Elvis 2002" and will be a collection of stories, observations, perspectives and various musical performance segments. Confirmed performers thus far are U2, Dave Matthews and No Doubt. Lisa Maria is close to coming on board as well. The lineup of interviewees include Bono, Sheryl Crow, Britney Spears, Vince Vaughan, Sarah Jessica Parker and Bill Clinton. There are many other artists waiting to be confirmed.
Norah's segment was filmed at the Windmill Lane Studio in Dublin Ireland on October 5th.
The hour-long program will air in on NBC-TV at 10:00PM on November 28th (Thanksgiving evening) and around the world shortly thereafter (in December) on the highest profile television networks.
Come away with me is the only album that I could listen to while studying..that's THE ONLY ALBUM.
a few weeks ago,as I was sitting in class, waiting for it to start , I heard a familiar tune....I couldn't place it first. It sounded like it was coming from a discman with the volume way up..and I mean ear-shattering max...and then I finally recognized it. I said to the girl I was talking to Someone is playing Norah Jones... and I kept on looking around until I saw this guy, who was seated at the other side of the room. Yes, ALL THE WAY at the other side and he was just ...he was immersed in Norah Jones, eyes-closed, his hands, gently slapping his desk, his head swaying....:glee:...he had Don't know why on repeat and this other girl and I were kinda giggling amongst ourselves. I mean, the album Come Away With Me is not really the type of music that you turn up your discman to you know..:D
Norah Jones - Number 9 on Ew Entertainers of the Year 2002
http://a552.g.akamai.net/f/552/606/1d/image.pathfinder.com/ew/dynamic/imgs/021212/145138__norahjones_l.jpg
There's an aphorism that goes something like this: in a crowd full of bellowers, a whisperer can be the loudest mouth in the room. That's as good an explanation as any for how it was that Norah Jones' less-than-stentorian tones, in the midst of this year's vocal cross fire between Christina, Avril, Shakira, Madonna, and Britney, came through clearest. ''Come away with me in the night,'' she sang, making an offer that few among us could miss hearing...or refuse.
When it came out in February, the chances of something as exquisitely underplayed and undersung as Jones' debut going double platinum and lodging in the top 10 seemed about as likely as the Angels winning the Series. But even kids who'd never bought an album on a jazz label like Blue Note before were bewitched by ''Come Away With Me'''s acoustic blend of bop and pop. Jones instantly became our sultry siren of song, reviving the ideal of the wounded romantic who spends the wee hours pining and being pined for -- Frank and Ava rolled up into one alluring package.
There's just one problem. ''It's funny, this image thing,'' says the 23-year-old singer-songwriter. ''Because I'm not soft-spoken and romantic, at all. I must be, somewhere deep down, otherwise I wouldn't like that kind of music. But I'm only like that when I'm on stage. I'm pretty much just loudmouthed, obnoxious, and silly. But when I meet new people, I'm shy, and that's why I'm shy on stage -- because those are people I haven't met.''
Shyness is easily conflated with sultriness, come to think of it. But it's a mistake we're happy to perpetuate, since picturing Jones as the pinnacle of cool makes the music's spell that much more enveloping. Not that we should always expect her to be this tranquil. Jones, who seems a virtual shoo-in for this February's Best New Artist Grammy, allows that she could head in any number of directions. ''Sometimes I want to sing jazz again,'' says the woman who studied jazz piano for seven years. Other times, ''I want to play guitar in a rock band!''
Might we even see her rock out? She laughs and warns: ''You know, my version of 'rock out' is very low-key.'' We're all ears. --by Chris Willman
_____________________________________________
Come Away With Me is at the 10th Best Album for 2002
Come Away With Me Norah Jones (Blue Note) A sleeper album, for sure -- and also at times a little too sleepy for its own good. But the understated charms of Jones' debut, from her smoky-lite voice to the casual spaciousness of the music, sneak up on you more and more with each listen. She recalls the young Bonnie Raitt and the very drowsy Mose Allison but, miraculously, doesn't appear to be mimicking anyone. Don't call it a jazz comeback -- she's more of a roots chanteuse than anything else -- but do call it a serene cup of decaf-tea pop that deserved its left-field success.
:lol: ...... may I clarify some things? :D
on Jones and Mayer....
Jones toured with Mayer spring of this year, Jones was the opening act for Mayer but she then started a headlining tour summer of this year.
During the MTV music awards, Jones was sitting along with Mayer and Scotty Crowe (you'll know about him in a bit..in case you don't know who he is), the Mayer camp also saw Jones in Oregon, in one of her headlining shows.
....not that I have some say to it, but from the looks of it,they are very good friends. Jones is dating her bassist and John, well, I know him and Carlton aren't dating anymore,neither is Hewitt.
and who is Scotty Crowe? Scotty Crowe is Mayer's road journal guy and here's a road journal entry that might interest you Norah Jones fans (and Mayer fans alike)
from www.johnmayer.com
Upon arriving at LAX, we prepared for rehearsals for the VH1 Big in 2002 Awards. It was at an old boxing auditorium. The John Mayer and Norah Jones entities were performing a bit together – so our crews meshed like trucker hats and marinated on reminiscences. So we hung out and ate Mexican at a place that was so dark I felt like I should have been developing pictures. This was on Tuesday, by the way.
so if you guys have VH1 check out their Big in 2002 awards on Dec. 15th, Mayer and Jones are going to be performing together..
and just useless trivia:
John Mayer and Norah Jones performed a song called Bessie Smith together last April, in SF.
Norah Jones has sung other songs which are not included in her two albums. She has sung songs for Charlie Hunter as one of her guest vocalists. Here is the list:
a. More than this - with Charlie Hunter Quartet
b. Ruler of my heart - with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band
c. In the dark - with Jools Holland
d. Day is done - with Charlie Hunter Quartet
e. Are you lonesome tonight - tribute to Elvis documentary
Norah Jones Doesn't Like to Work Out
Jun 18, 9:32 AM EST
Norah Jones won't be taking exercise equipment on tour with her this summer — because she doesn't have any.
"I've never worked out. In fact, I need to lose a few pounds," said the Grammy-winning singer, although her slender shape contradicts her. "I don't care if I'm a little chubby. I love to eat way too much."
Actually, Jones says she has worked out — once.
"I'm just not good at it," the 24-year-old told The Associated Press in a recent interview.
Instead of exercise, she likes to dine out with friends and watch television when her schedule allows.
Her favorite shows? Sitcoms.
"I'm like a zombie. My boyfriend, he makes fun of me, because I'm always talking about what's going on with Rachel and Chandler," she laughed, referring to two of the characters on NBC's "Friends."
"He's like, `Oh my God, you're such a nerd, you call them by their names, like they're your friends next door.'"
Our girl Norah doesnt like working out.. Cute..
Norah joined Dolly Parton on stage at The 2003 37th Annual CMA Awards. The event aired live from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday, November 5th on the CBS Television Network. The duo performed “The Grass Is Blue,” a Parton song recorded by Jones for the tribute album Just Because I’m A Woman: The Songs of Dolly Parton released on October 14th.
Norah graces the cover of the November 2003 Music Issue of Vanity Fair. Also shown on the cover are Willie Nelson, Queen Latifah, James Taylor, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, Anthony Kiedas, Lucinda Williams, and others. The issue is available at newstands now.
by the way, you might wanna check out the TOM MCRAE thread :) if not for PJ i wouldnt have discovered his music. spiteri, i'm pretty sure you gonna like him the way you like alexi murdoch:p
but for now, NJ muna tayo! sana wag siya tawaging diva... panget diva? LOL
not exactly reena. if i'm not mistaken PJ has yet to hear anything from TM. he just happened to see his cd in TOWER rack and asked me kung familiar. so i checked his site and listened to the clips. one minute into the first song (karaoke soul), i was already impressed. after the 2nd song (you cut her hair) i became a fan ;)
now after listening to some tracks from the debut album and the entire 2nd cd, he can easily land in top 5 list of my favorite singer/songwriters of all time. damien rice still on top of course ;)
ohhh... gotcha! :D
what's the name of the band that Norah Jones collaborated with in the production of the song New York City? ... I could see the album in my head but I don't remember their name..and also, correct me if I'm wrong you guys, I was under the impression that this CD which has 7 tracks has Norah Jones singing in all the tracks..but it's not a Norah Jones album per se....
Bought na the New York City CD! Love it! I like the bluesy Norah. The songs in the album fit her well, bagay sa voice nya. *okay*
