Take a vacation....
Its advisable to take a break for a while. No stocks are good for the short-term. If you have lots of money and willing to hold an issue for long-term investment purposes, then buy some blue-chips. Caution: what seems cheap could still go lower, much much lower.
Any tips out there regarding the market?

The 91-day T-bill rate, used by banks in pricing loans (benchmark), jumped to 8.975 percent yesterday from the previous week's 8.69 percent. (a high since late March)
But the Treasury sold only P550 million worth of 91-day bills out of the P1 billion on offer.
The Bureau of Treasury also sold P650 million worth of 182-day bills out of the P1.5 billion on offer and P680 million worth of one-year bills out of P1.5 billion on offer.
The 182-day T-bill rate increased to 10.375 percent from 9.9 percent while the 364-day T-bill rose to 11.423 percent from 10.963 percent.
Looks like a correction tomorrow!?! Strong recovery for most stocks.
Consider ALI, AC, MUSX, TEL, WEB, BW, V, etc.

Metro Manila bombings and the insurgency problem in Mindanao aggravates the situation as jittery local investors are forced to shift their assets into dollars.
Yesterday, the peso plumbed a new 19-month low after the central bank's latest overnight rate hike failed to sustain a mild recovery towards the end of last week.
Therefore resulting in the interest rate rise in Benchmark T-Bills to attempt to stabilize the Philippine Peso.

The start of a bad week?
Proof of the market's panic selling, a total of 105 losers drowned eight gainers on Monday.. while the prices of 20 issues were unchanged.
Foreigners again sold a net amount of PhP178.2 million, the 12th day in a row that they have sold more Philippine stocks than they have bought. In all, they have sold a net amount of PhP1.36 billion during the last 12 days. For the year, foreigners are likewise net sellers in the amount of PhP6.69 billion.

Problems With our Economy.
It's an issue of confidence. If the confidence of the Filipinos themselves continue to be weak, then foreigners will not come in and this will immediately cause an impact on the peso. Political worries topped by the 26-day old hostage crisis in the southern Mindanao region stand in the way of the peso's recovery.
It will take more than raising interest rates to stabilize the peso because the problem with the peso is not the issue of supply and demand but speculative dollar buying due to a confidence crisis.
The political unrest is gradually widening outside of Mindanao with the bombing of Glorietta and Megamall. No one has claimed responsibility for the blast but the incident caused an already nervous market to be jittery.
This latest spate of violence has forced Philippine President Joseph Estrada to cut short his 5 day state visit to China and attend to the pressing issues at home. He has also cancelled his scheduled visit to European key cities, starting with a five-day visit to London on June 1, ending with a bond roadshow in Paris on June 5 in order to find potential investors.
It was also stated that he would not declare a state of emergency nor martial law.
What are your views on the national economy's progress and development?

If you have the money to lock up for a long term investment... i would than recommend it. There are many funds out there which are diversified amonst blue chips and technology. It depends on how aggressive you want to be... little risk yields little reward... big risk yields big rewards... I agree with you.. the net present value of money today compounded with interest will over time will be big.

If you have the cash to lock up in a fund then do it.. given you understand it is for the long haul.
If its a short term than treasury bills at 28 days is okay... The interest rates will rise in which you can take advantage of the rates at a later time.
i will research on Citibank offloading dollars. It could be a supply and demand issue... given their is a demand for dollars... they're taken advantage of it and selling down as it will most likely hit 45. Citibank doesnt intend to leave the country so if they are accumlating pesos than its probably to lock up for the future.

THE TWO EVILS OF ECONOMICS
If pushed to the limit, the central bank may have no other recourse but to choose between "two evils" -- allow a weak peso or hike interest rate further.
Raising interest rates risks companies closing shop and more Filipinos losing their jobs. At the height of the Asian financial crisis, the peso dropped to as low as PhP46 to a dollar while interest rates rose to as high as 32%, forcing companies to restructure their loans, rethink expansion and retrench people.
There isn't a right or wrong answer on this problem, but it must be the government which decides... we will not be able to steer our way through the situation without absorbing some cost. That is the irony of this balance - the two evils.
There is a school of thought that preaches additional interest rate increases would further dampen economic growth. For one, borrowers, especially companies already saddled with debts, would find it more difficult to recover. A further rise in local interest rates is not a guarantee the peso will start to stabilize, considering that pressures come from both the economic and the political fronts.
There is a psychological effect that something is wrong in the economy whenever the peso falls... an impact on business confidence.

It seems there are enough scare stories floating in Asia’s venture capital circuit to rein in the optimism of many investors. The previous week’s collapse of US-based online retailer Boo.com after spending much of its $135 million capital, the closure by Walt Disney of its online toy start-up Toymart and the continued weakness of internet and technology shares in the region are making investors edgy. A significant consolidation is taking place in the venture capital business and it could get tougher for dot-coms in the next three to four months. The pain is going to come as these companies run out of cash.
Venture capital investment in China remains a trickle compared with the US, but it could stage phenomenal growth. The mainland will be forced to open the gate for investment in its telecom and internet companies as promised to European and US trade negotiators of the on-going talks on China’s entry to the World Trade Organization.

AC is looking like the buy of a lifetime. Its previous bleeders, GLO and PF, are posting fast turn around stories. ALI and BPI are as stable as ever. Over a 1 year horizon if I buy AC now what does it matter IF IF IF! it drops 50% or so to P4.00 when in a year it will likely be at P15.00?
Many are second guessing themselves asking what if it drops and forget to ask what if it flies?
I just gave AC as an example for one of the best long-term buys in the Philippines. I wanted to stress the point that the REAL Warren Buffet confides in, the best time to buy is on times of sky high interest rates and crisis.
But you ask what stocks I like over a shorter term, say 1 year. FLI, LTDI, ICT. Then I would go with ALI, AC, SMCB, GLO and maybe JFC. Forget TEL, MER/B, SMPH (OOOHH why o why SMPH?), and the banks. And definitely avoid or sell all the debt ridden issues like CMP, ELI, MEG, PLTL, TEL...
how about my FAVORITE SPECULATIVES:
WEB, V and BW
WEB and V are the only ones with any meat (although judging from the PSE/news releases V is starting looking a whole lot better than WEB).
BW something big will happen over the next 2 months or so. Back to 30? we'll see

Problem with trading diamonds or triangles. The breakout/breakdown points are sort of vague. July may be the right time for it to happen. Hell, it might not happen at all. For whatever its worth, the apex of the Diamond extends up to the end of June. Lets all hope that by then, it decides once and for all where it wants to go. This is getting to be a very frustrating market (theirs and ours, as well). Good luck to you.

The peso was slightly down during the morning trade, with some corporate clients asking banks to buy more dollars on fears the greenback may start to fly anew. The peso opened at PhP42.69, hit a high of PhP42.735, before settling at its morning average of PhP42.688.
The trend, however, reversed in the afternoon as more banks sold dollars, improving the peso's afternoon average to PhP42.596, even higher than the PhP42.666 the other day.

Swing to Singapore
The momentum in regional internet listing activity has swung in favor of the Singapore Exchange (SGX). SGX boasts numerous dot-coms, e-business enablers, etc lining up for a listing. SGX is seeing a spurt of equity activity not seen in the region since Tom.com scudded across the investor landscape.
The SGX has belatedly entered the internet sweepstakes amid global technology price volatility and deferred listings on its rival exchanges. Singapore-based Stratech Systems which describes itself as an “information technology company and an i-enabler, providing infrastructure and internet applications and services to businesses”, is preparing to list on the SGX. A market source says the deal is being 70 percent underwritten by Development Bank of Singapore, with the remainder underwritten by Citicorp and Salomon Smith Barney.
The source says the company originally intended to list in May but held back for more felicitous market conditions. The company is back on the IPO trail, but the source says its IPO is delayed by pricing disagreements between management and the investment banks.
Why can't we clean up our exchange?

yieldbroker.com launches research function
The first stage of Australia’s first internet-based research and trading capability for the secondary bond market was launched on May 30. Institutional clients can access credit, economic and strategic research of the participating banks — Deutsche Bank, Salomon Smith Barney, UBS Warburg and Westpac Institutional Bank. The four banks have an equal interest in yieldbroker.com. Molten Markets, a Sydney-based financial sector e-commerce firm that designed, and will maintain, the yieldbroker.com portal, also owns equity in the company.
The trading capability is to be rolled out in June. The banks will submit prices on Australian government, state government and corporate bonds, as well as New Zealand government bonds. The prices will be averaged to provide indicative prices and investors can also obtain live dealing prices from any one – or all four – of the banks. Prices can be requested on an outright basis, versus futures contracts traded on the Sydney Futures Exchange, or on a switch basis versus another bond.

BuzzCity.com gets $10 million
Singapore-based email alert service, BuzzCity.com, has attracted $10 million from several venture capital firms in its second round of financing.
British venture capital company 3i, together with the $400 million 3i Asia Pacific Technology Fund, is investing $5 million, BancBoston Capital, from the US is investing $2.2 million, while OCBC, Wearnes & Walden (OWW), one of the original investors in the company, is injecting $2.8 million.
BuzzCity.com’s first round of financing last year attracted around $1.7 million from investors, including a subsidiary of Singapore Press and OWW.
Lai Kok Fung, chief executive officer and co-founder of BuzzCity.com, says the fund will be used to expand and promote its services in the Americas and eventually to Europe.
The company is eyeing an initial public offering in the next six to 12 months with a possible listing in Singapore, Nasdaq or a European exchange.
Its revenue stream comes mostly from the customized consumer lists it provides to direct marketers.
BuzzCity.com has developed a technology that allows it to detect changes in websites, summarize the changes, and compile them as alerts to users of those websites.
It already manages the e-mail system of mainland Chinese portal, Sina.com, and has attracted computer firms Dell and NEC as advertisers.

MTRC looking for $3.9 billion
Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway (MTRC) is looking to raise as much as HK$30 billion ($3.9 billion) from its privatisation and simultaneous IPO in September according to a report in the normally prescient local paper Apple Daily on May 29. Apple reckons the announced share sale will be priced at no less than 12 times MTRC’s price-to-earnings ratio. Bankers at the three appointed global coordinators — Goldman Sachs, HSBC and Warburg Dillon Read — would neither confirm nor deny the report but a senior source close to the deal says “a target of around $3 billion would certainly not be unrealistic for a name as prestigious as this”.

China Unicom in pursuit of “over $4 billion”
A banker close to the proposed initial public office (IPO) for China Unicom, China’s second largest telecommunications company after China Telecom, says the state-owned enterprise is looking to raise “over $4 billion” from a transaction it claims is imminent. The deal will see Unicom selling around 2.5 billion new shares at between HK$11.5 ($1.48) and HK$14.5 per share and talk is that the deal – following current global road shows – will begin trading in New York and Hong Kong on June 21 and June 22, respectively. Morgan Stanley and its China-based sister China International Capital are the joint-global coordinators on what, successful execution pending, could be the largest first-time share offering by a PRC concern.

PCCW eyes loan, bond refinancing
Not surprisingly in the light of the size of its liability, Pacific Century CyberWorks (PCCW) is planning to refinance up to half of its $12 billion loan raised to purchase Cable & Wireless Hong Kong Telecom. That deal is planned to settle in August.
The company is looking at raising $5.3 to $6 billion in five to seven-year maturity debt, helping to ease the financing horizon of its current exposure.
JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley Dean Witter are advising the company on a rating. The company is hoping for a A rating.
PCCW would be constrained by Hong Kong’s sovereign foreign currency credit rating of A. Such a rating would put them on a par with government-owned Mass Transit Railway (MTRC) and Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCRC). MTRC’s 7.5 percent 02/2009 bond trades at 197 basis points over 10-year US Treasuries and KCRC’s eight-percent 03/2010 bond trades at 209 over. Hutchison Whampoa, also rated A, is on negative credit watch due to its telecom ambitions.
A senior strategist at an American investment bank in Hong Kong was a little sceptical of the company’s hopes. “The company is doing the right thing in trying to create strong balance sheet with predictable and solid utilities earnings. But I would say a A rating would be premature and overly optimistic. At the same time all telecom companies have had their ratings under pressure, including PCCW’s joint venture partner, Telstra.”

Hutchison forges alliance with China Unicom
Hutchison Whampoa, the flagship of Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing, has forged a strategic alliance with China United Telecommunications (China Unicom) that will enable the two companies to cooperate in various telecommunication activities on mainland China. The two companies said on May 31 that their joint venture business in China would be nationwide and would involve telecom-related consultancy and training, including network planning, design, operations, maintenance, marketing, and sales and customer services. Hutchison and China Unicom signed a business cooperation framework agreement covering their partnership.
The two companies also signed an agreement in which Hutchison will acquire $400 million worth of China Unicom shares at its initial public offering next month. China Unicom says it expects to raise around $3.98 billion when it places 2.46 billion shares through a dual listing in Hong Kong and New York.

Hong Kong Disneyland to list…in 2008
After two quarters of what many have regarded as numerous Mickey Mouse listings in Hong Kong stock markets, came the announcement of the real thing on June 1. Commissioner of Tourism Michael Rowse then said that an offering of shares in the HKSAR’s Walt Disney $3 billion theme park — which is due to open in 2005 — will be made to the public. No indication was given as to the size of the listing and investment bankers will not be holding their breath for the beauty contest, given that the IPO will not take place until at least 2008.
The brainchild of HKSAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa to boost tourism and infrastructure development, Hong Kong Disneyland is costing the government $2.2 billion for a 57 percent stake in Hong Kong International Theme Parks (Disney owns the remaining 43 percent). With distinct echoes of old economy orthodoxy, Rowse says he wants the project to be able to demonstrate a profitable track record before wooing investors and notes “an element of doubt” would cloud any issue that lacked such.

I think this thread should be renamed - Ask Dailo! :D
Just to put in my 2 cents - if you're a conservative person, place your money in dollar denominated debt of the big blue chips like Globe and Ayala Corp. It's s foregone conclusion these companies won't default on their debt. Return is in the vicinity of 10% yearly plus you have the security of having your money in greenbacks.
If you have a little bit of an appetite for risk, buy up the local blue chips - AC, ALI, BPI, SMC, Meralco, ABS-CBN and SMPrime. Many of these companies are at close to their 52 weeks lows and continue to have good fundamentals and excellent management teams. If you are willing to wait 12 to 24 months, the stocks of these companies are a good buy. Ayala Land for instance in recent weeks touched an all time low. It is still a good buy at under P6. If I had to pick 2 stocks it would be ALI and SMPrime. Then AC and Globe after that. SMC is a good buy but has been relatively unscathed in the recent correction and Meralco is surrounded by a lot of uncertainty. ABS likewise is close to being fairly valued at this point. My dig against that company though is I have little faith in their whole convergence philosophy happening - Sky Cable is just treading above water and Bayantel is all but sunk. So much for 2 of their 3 big arms for their convergence plans...

My 2 cents...
I agree with you on the dollar denominated debt. As far as the rest, its simple CASH. Generally all the companies I recommended are cash rich, I mean hoards of it. SMC, AC, FLI/FDC...
As far as SMPH they have excellent fundamentals and major cash but the stock is not a big money maker in my eyes. Two things to make money, big price appreciation and for long-termers, dividends. SMPH historically is poor in both. Compared to AC/ALI, big div givers and you can easily double your money several times with those stocks in terms of price appreciation. I agree with you on Meralco and ABS-CBN.
just my thought. :)

There are many houses to choose from depending on the services. That is an opinionated question which i'd rather not answer... of course i would say mine.
DAILO KULIT SECURITIES. :D :D :D
It will go as far as you make it. Youre responsible for your gains/losses, you owe it to yourself to take the risk... I can only provide you advice and show you the door. It is you who must open it.
Other forms include what Batang had mentioned above:
<;snip>;
if you're a conservative person, place your money in dollar denominated debt of the big blue chips like Globe and Ayala Corp. It's s foregone conclusion these companies won't default on their debt. Return is in the vicinity of 10% yearly plus you have the security of having your money in greenbacks.
Good Luck! :D :D :D

AC is indeed attractive but my I prefer to look at individual units in the Ayala Group and individually pick out which company to buy.
ALI is the best buy of the bunch because it is very undervalued, it is trading at a steep discount to NAV and has an excellent management team - perhaps the best in the country of any company.
Globe has a great upside but is nearly fully valued at present. I happen to be of the opinion that WAP is much ado about nothing - this is at best a transition technology that will be supplanted by more advanced wireless technology like DoCoMo so this doesn't really add further value to the company. Still, the company's cellular business is growing by leaps and bounds and Globe will probably hit the 3 million subscriber mark by early next year.
BPI is conervative and solid and its stock price will behave in the same fashion. Some upside, not a lot and you will be unlikely to lose money on the stock even in the short term. This stock will be the one of the big three (in the Ayala Group) that will trade within the narrowest band.
Purefoods - Not enough volume, not very exciting even if it did.
Personally, I think the biggest reason to enter AC at present is as an internet play since that's the only way you can reap the benefit from companies like iAyala. It is true AC is undervalued but it also has quite a bit of debt and I think the company's internet activities won't contribute anything to the bottom line in the near future.

[This message has been edited by DAILO (edited 06-03-2000).]
A tale of two rivalries
The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (SEHK) and the Singapore Exchange (SGX) have plans for globalized trading — and so far these do not include each other.
On June 6 the SGX announced plans to share its electronic trading and settlement platform with the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). A joint statement from the exchanges says, “Investors in Australia and Singapore will be able to buy and sell equity securities in each other’s market, in their own currency, through stockbrokers in their own country.”
Then on June 7, the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEx — the holding company for the SEHK and the Hong Kong Futures Exchange) announced that it is in talks to enter a 10-member super exchange called the Global Equity Market.
This alliance (the how and when are not yet specified) will see integration of some form by the following exchanges: the New York Stock Exchange, the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX), Euronext (which encompasses Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris), the Toronto Stock Exchange, the Bolsa Mexicana de Valores and the Bolsa de Valores de Sao Paulo. A HKEx press release states the initiative will create a 24-hour global bourse with a market capitalization exceeding $20 trillion.
It is interesting that, while the ASX has managed to form partnerships separately with the SGX and SEHK, the Singapore and Hong Kong stock exchanges have yet to see the point of linking with each other. Likewise it is interesting that the HKEx would announce its intention to integrate with, for example, the Sao Paulo bourse before it finds the ways and means to combine with the SGX — an exchange with which there is much greater cross-over of investor interest.
It is apparent that Hong Kong and Singapore are too used to being rivals to consider integration. Hong Kong and Singapore are competing against each other. If you look at the takeover of Hong Kong Telecom…. There is a degree of politics involved. Singapore Telecommunications was rebuffed in favor of the Hong Kong internet and convergence firm Pacific Century CyberWorks.
I would like to see an alliance in Asia. You see Frankfurt and London, why can’t Asian exchanges get together and do something? I would like to see them sit down and talk. They should see what they could do to form some alliance… I guess … these two places are fighting for the top spot, to be the financial center in Asia.
Unfortunately there is no plans yet of inviting the PHISIX.

FYI.
Templeton unsure of investment in PNB
Templeton Asset Management has received, but not yet accepted an invitation by TSL Beatrice of the US to join an international consortium bidding for 80 percent of Philippine National Bank (PNB), says Templeton president Mark Mobius.
“We have not reached any formal contractual agreement with potential bidders so far, and are therefore open to all options. We are taking a wait-and-see attitude. Once we have more information about TLC Beatrice’s banking partners and the detailed financial plan, we will make our decision,” he adds.
Mobius says several factors prompted Templeton to consider investing in PNB. He also identified the challenges facing prospective investors in PNB.
“PNB used to be a very profitable bank, it still owns a large remittance franchise and has a lot of goodwill in the country. The non-performing loan [NPL] problems that the bank is facing cannot be resolved without the government bearing the responsibility of mismanaging the loan portfolio by taking over at least some of the NPLs and amending the legislation to expedite foreclosures and liquidations,” he says.

P140 floor price for the PNB shares (even if it gives you the majority stake) is totally ridiculous.
I wouldn't touch any share(s) of PNB at the current market price. It's just a terrible bank that's probably worth P35 per share since you would have to put in at least P10B to recapitalize the bank.
God bless Loida Lewis if sh'es willing to shell out good money for PNB to help out the homeland. God help the homeland if Lucio Tan continues to control the bank.

It's relatively safe, however I did move the funds I had there to other banks such as BPI, EquitablePCI, and Citibank.

Quamnet.com listing quilled
Hong Kong financial information portal Quamnet.com announced that it has put off its IPO on Hong Kong’s Growth Market (GEM). Bloomberg reports that the planned $56 million issue was deferred due to weak investor demand.
The delay follows news of another Hong Kong internet listing casualty, last week’s announcement that ColbyNet was deferring its listing on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong.
The whole market globally for internet issues is stalled. It’s not a Hong Kong-specific problem. But strong stories, like Sina.com and Rediff.com, continue to get done and to trade up well. I think there is still a market in Hong Kong for internet companies with very strong stories... there will be much more selectivity and effort at differentiation in the market. But that’s a good thing. :D :D :D

AsiaCommerce plans to raise $20 million
Business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce investor, AsiaCommerce, says it plans to raise “more than $20 million” next month from investors in a new funding round. On June 14, the Hong Kong firm announced that it had injected S$8.5 million ($4.9 million) into Asiaship.com, a Singapore-based B2B portal, which provides shippers competitive quotes on shipping freight rates.
In January AsiaCommerce raised around $24 million from its first round of financing in which venture capital firm H&Q Asia Pacific Ventures Management also participated.
Emile Lee, a spokesperson for AsiaCommerce, says the company may hold its public offering in the first quarter of next year, depending on market conditions and could list on Nasdaq, Singapore or/and Hong Kong’s Growth Enterprise Market.
Lee says the group wants to expand and invest in e-commerce enablers in other parts of Asia besides Singapore, where it has made most of its investments since it began operations earlier this year.
AsiaCommerce is now negotiating an investment in a B2B portal involved in airfreight logistics.
Lee says AsiaCommerce’s strategy is to create a “comprehensive horizontal end-to-end logistics fulfilment capability for vertical marketplaces in Asia.”

Acer sets up $260 million venture fund
Taiwan computer company Acer Group, together with investors that include Government of Singapore Investment Corporation’s (GSIC) Special Investments and units of Nomura Securities and The Chase Manhattan Bank, has set up a $260 million venture capital fund to invest in internet-related start-ups. The Cayman Island-registered IP Fund One will be managed by Acer Technology Ventures (ATV) a unit of the Acer Group. Sohu.com to launch IPO within two weeks
A source close to the company says China portal Sohu.com will launch its $70 million Nasdaq IPO during the next two weeks. The positive response received by Indian portal Rediff.com’s $55 million IPO and Sina.com’s IPO two months ago has convinced Sohu the timing is right. Market opinion that US interest rates will not rise – ensuring calmer capital markets – is also a factor affecting timing. Rediff has so far doubled its share price since listing this week, while Sina’s American depository receipt (ADR) currently trades at the $33 level, representing a rise of 84 percent over its IPO price. Credit Suisse First Boston is sole bookrunner for the deal.
Netease starts roadshow next week
Similar in size, similar in shape, fellow China portal Netease, will start its road show next week, according to a source close to the deal. The $70 million slated Nasdaq ADR is to be priced on June 29 after presentations to international institutional investors. Merrill Lynch is sole bookrunner for the deal.

Stock market beginner's guide
Before investing in the stock market, set your short-term and long-term goals. Specify your objectives to have a clearer evaluation of your status. Investing in the stock market is all about sacrifice, commitment, discipline and patience. Everybody is aware of the risks of investing; the key is to remain focused and objective in your approach.
Understand the language
Know the terms, what is their literal definition, what do they mean to you. Terms like preferred stocks, common stocks, initial public offering, market value, etc.

Stock market beginner's guide PART 2
REWARD VS. RISK
Investing on your own
Investing on your own has the potential for greater growth and profit; your money is readily available; and you have greater control of your assets (as opposed to investing them in mutual funds).
Risk is an integral part of investing. You risk losing some or all of your money; you may even incur additional losses. If the rate of return on your investment is less than the inflation rate, you receive low value for your investment or savings account.
The positive side is that in the long run an investor can profit by about 10 to 12%.
Investing as part of a group
An insurance company may invest your funds in various safe investments like high quality stocks. As part of a company's pension plan, the company may invest them in stocks, bonds and the like.
Mutual funds -- a collection of stocks and bonds, but this may contain other types of securities like mortgages, cash accounts and the like. A mutual fund can also be defined as a portfolio of carefully selected stocks, a diversified investment option, professional management and opportunity to invest with minimal cash.

Stock market beginner's guide - PART 3
SOME FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE STOCK MARKET
Rising interest rates -- cost of borrowing increases
Increasing inflation rate -- purchasing power of consumers decrease dramatically.
Exchange rate fluctuations -- forces investors to hold on to their funds because of the uncertainty involved.
Political Unrest -- makes investors, specifically foreign, become more cautious.
International disputes -- have repercussions that are not favorable for investing.
High Unemployment Rate -- result in higher crime rate.
Gross Domestic Product/Gross National Product figures -- when high, means the economy is improving.
RESEARCHING STOCKS
Before purchasing stocks, know and understand the company, its products, its services and its management. Read finance magazines, the business section of your daily newspaper; watch television; surf the Internet.
The selection process
Know what kind of investor you are. If you are a conservative investor, invest in mature and large companies for a safe return on your investment. If you are not that conservative and not necessarily impetuous, go to the medium caps. If you are adventurous, you can go for the small caps.
Make a list of the companies you understand. Study their reports, prospectus, websites, financial analyses.

Stock market beginner's guide - PART 4
FINANCIAL ANALYSIS
These are some of the basic tools you can use to analyze the financial status of a company:
EPS (Earnings per share) -- what is left from gross revenues after taxes, bad debts and other expenses have been subtracted. The formula for EPS is net income divided by number of common stocks outstanding. The higher the earnings per share the better it is for the investor.
ROE (Return on Stockholder's Equity) -- presents what the company has done with the money the stockholders invested. The formula for the ROE is net income divided by total stockholder's equity. The higher the ROE the better it is for the stockholder. One must also compare your stock ROE to the industry average ROE to see how the stock is performing.
P/E (Price earnings) ratio -- shows the relationship between the stocks current price and its reported annual earnings. The P/E ratio indicates how much you need to pay to buy those earnings per share. The formula for computing the price earnings ratio is the market price of the share divided by the earnings per share. The lower the price earnings ratio, the more favorable it is for the investor.
Sales and earnings history -- Invest in a company that continuously experiences increases in sales and earnings. Track your stock's performance for at least 5 years to be able to analyze a trend. Note if the growth rate of earnings is greater than that of sales. This means that the company is more efficient and prudent in handling its expenses.
Beta -- measures how volatile a stock's price is relative to the stock market as a whole. A beta of 1 means the stock moves up and down at market pace. A beta of greater than 1 means it is faster and wider than the market. A beta of less than 1 suggests that the stock movement is fairly small and slower than the market as a whole. It is wise to avoid stocks with betas above 1 because they are volatile and capricious.
Company size -- is measured through market capitalization. The formula for market cap is market price of a share multiplied by number of common stocks outstanding. Large caps provide steady gains and less risk. Mid caps have moderate gains and moderate risk. Small-caps may furnish greater gains but also present the greatest risk.
Relative industry strength -- you can determine the standing of your stocks depending on the indicator or ratio that you use and rank them as EPS,P/E ratio, ROE etc.
There are other measures an investor can use to evaluate a particular stock: current ratio, quick ratio, leverage ratios, activity ratios, profitability ratios and growth ratios.
DIVERSIFYING THE PORTFOLIO
The advantage of diversification is that the risk on your total investments decreases. When one industry is plunging in terms of value another may be experiencing abundant gains. This cancels out the negative effect and protects the investor from experiencing extreme losses in his investments. It is advisable for an investor to diversify his/her investments: "Don't put all your eggs in one basket," so to speak.

RP peso down early amid weaker regional FXs
The Philippine peso (PHP) was slightly weak against the U.S. dollar in thin trade early Tuesday amid softer regional currencies led by the Singapore dollar.
The peso's losses are seen capped at PHP42.750 due to frail corporate demand for the greenback. At 0140 GMT, the U.S. dollar/peso averaged PHP42.660 against Monday's PHP42.655 close.
The pair traded within a packed 1.5-centavo band at between PHP42.650-PHP42.665 amid a slim volume of U.S. $15.5 million.
"The peso should be weaker with the weaker regional currencies led by the Singaporean dollar. So the market may try breaching the PHP42.700 resistance today."
The dollar/peso touched the PHP42.700 resistance Monday but failed to break the barrier amid a lack of corporate dollar demand.
The Singapore dollar weakened to 1.7336 in early Asian trade against the 1.7267, 1.7284 quotes late Monday.
The Thai baht is seen firm early against the dollar at 39.15-39.17 from 39.18 late Monday but dealers said the baht may soon track the Singapore dollar's weakness.
"That's why trading in the dollar/peso was guarded in anticipation of a weakening in the baht. So banks are keeping a long dollar position. They are immediately replenishing any dollar sales."
The peso is usually compared with the baht due to similarities in the export markets of the Philippines and Thailand.

Still reading. Continue to appreciate all the work you are doing! Just one suggestion (and I don't know what KD feels about this) - perhaps you can start a new thread every week so that people aren't intimidated to enter a thread with well over a hundred replies. Something like HOT TIPS - Greed is Good (June 19-23). Well, just a suggestion. This way, I think it would be more manageable.

Malaysia looks to open bond markets
In a move to diversify corporate financing, the Malaysian government will next week announce measures to improve its domestic capital markets. Following similar moves in Singapore over the past few years, Kuala Lumpur may introduce hedging instruments and bond futures, allow companies to arrange multiple bond issues over a two-year period and change investment regulations for pension funds and insurance companies.
This will form part of a 10-year reform strategy and follows approval for foreign-owned companies to sell bonds without seeking authorisation from Bank Negara Malaysia, the central bank.

Philippines looks to yen
Resolving the debate on who is to lead the Philippines’ first yen deal since 1996, Jose Pardo secretary of finance announced that it had chosen Nikko Salomon Smith Barney and Daiwa Securities. Having postponed a sale of euro-currency denominated debt in April, this issue could raise up to $700 million in five- to 10-year yen securities. Indeed, this might mean that the Philippines had fulfilled its need to raise $1.5 billion and thus does not have to tap the euro market after all.

Korea Telecom buys M.com for $3 billion
Korea Telecom (KT)has bought 49 percent of South Korean mobile phone operator Hansol M.com for W35 trillion ($3 billion), beating LG Telecom of the LG Group, in a move that will enable KT to reduce the lead of market leader SK Telecom.
KT has agreed to pay an average of W37,000 to W40,000 per share for the 14.89 percent stake owned by Hansol Paper, 20.1 percent holding of Bell Canada International and 13.98 percent interest of the American International Group.
About 30 percent of the purchase price is to be paid in cash, 40 percent in stock and the balance in notes, he says. He expects the purchase to be completed by the end of this month.
Predict competition in Korea’s 26 million mobile phone users market to intensify in the coming months as the two other major operators, SK Telecom and LG Telecom, try to protect and expand their respective market shares.

This forum is very quiet. Everybody must be doing their research and pencil footing in deciding to invest in the Phisix. Hey guys the Phisix is already expensive. Needs a healthy correction. Earnings are not that good and banks are still restucturing after mergering and a lot of unemployed managers and VPs in the streets right now.

Unicom’s sale of 2.46 billion shares was priced at between HK$11.50 to HK$14.5 per share last week with the company looking to raise up to $4 billion. However, as a result of a positive response to the road show in the US, Unicom has raised the indicative pricing level to between HK$13.80 and HK$16.00, representing a rise of over 10 percent. This puts the issue at just over $5 billion. Morgan Stanley Dean Witter is managing the sale.
China Unicom stock started trading in New York modestly higher than its offered price, indicating an appetite in the US for troublefree Chinese assests

Lessons from Tiger
In case you missed it, Eldrick "Tiger" Woods conquered the US Open last Sunday by shooting a record-breaking 12 under par. A feat deemed next to impossible! Tiger's unanimous success is not a fluke. Woods' dominance can be linked directly to his desire, focus, and hard work. Not by coincidence, the aforementioned attributes are common among the world's top traders. What separates the winners from the losers (In all walks of life) is their drive to succeed. Like Tiger, most successful traders have a vision or a goal. And every trade they place is centered around their long-term goal. Super-traders display focus and
discipline, and stick to their thoughtful strategies. Above all, successful traders work hard! So whether you combing the annals of Investor's Business Daily, or pouring over stock charts, the amount of hard work you put into your trading is directly correlated with your results. Whether your game is golf or options, if you practice, and learn, and do the right things consistently, you win! And when you win the game of trading, you make money!
