View Full Version : What Businesses would be Lucrative in the Provinces?
Metro Manila as we know it is congested not only with people, but with all the cottage and established industries and store outlets that are scattered all over the metro. As they say, the market is bigger but so is the competition.
Now the provincial markets are very much undeveloped as compared to their urban counterparts. What businesses would click there and why?
My own personal feeling is that cable tv and internet connections would do well in the province. It just may cost a significant buck to put up the infrustructure there.

Well...... putting up a small restaurant in between small towns and cities can be a good idea. But it should not be expensive because your customers will surely be jeepney and tricycle drivers. Eventhough these are your kind of customers, your place should still be attractive as any small but good restaurant here in Manila. The service should be good as well so that you will eventually bring in loyal customers everyday. But the only problem with that idea is that its quite hard to find good and trustworthy employees. If you want to succeed, you must do it yourself first then entrust it when you think the time is right for you to leave it with someone.

many places already have cable but a well placed provincial ISP might make it big.

our family along with some partners used to operate a cable company in our province. but after 2 yrs of operation, we sold it to home cable. well, there's profit but not quite substantial considering the huge investment. u have to look at it as a long term thing... return of investment wld take forever bcoz with the nature of the business, u'd always be expanding w/c wld mean additional capital. it wld be best if u have the exclusive rights to put up a cable system in the whole province or in it's biggest town... but if not u'll have to share the market w/c isn't really that big (well it depends on the area actually). in our place, 2 cable companies opened almost simultaneously & that spelled disaster for both parties since from the onset hati na ang market. and u have to spend more on advertising since u have competition.
same thing for an ISP... kung solo ka lang okay sya, but if there's competition **** 1 lang... it wld be hard to survive bcoz ppl in the province basically still have a simple & laid back lifestyle. cable & internet aren't necessities...
if i were to put up my own business now, i think i'll open a store for motor/tricycle parts since the most commom form of transportation in the provinces r the tricycles & the jeepneys. and it wldnt require a big investment...
a small restaurant business wld be okay too. a non-expensive one since u'd be mostly catering to the masa crowd.

What about the law, senator yak? Couldn't that be profitable? People still sue each other in the provinces...
Maybe they won't all pay in cash, though. Some might pay in goats, coconut, bananas, or fish.

a laboratory and clinic would be a profitable business in the province. everybody gets sick and needs a doctor. kaso, gastos.

kuya - thought about that for quite some time and it finally dawned on me that the practice is here - don't want to be stuck with goats, cows, carabaos.
By the way, want a banana?

Marketing Services --- PR, advertising. Most of the ad agencies are Manila-based and the advertising/PR/media relations culture has yet to be fully tapped in the provinces

^only in major cities like Cebu or Davao. Kahit nga dito sa Metro Manila di masyadong kailangan ng small business ang advertising/media relations/PR.

Follow-up: Pero if it's an ad agency based in Boracay... why not? With the advent of the internet, puwede ka nang hindi Manila-based kung creative output ang business mo.

my father told me that the most basic business of all that we all take for granted is the simple concept of Buy and Sell....
You get product from Manila then sell it in the province...
sounds simple but the trick here is getting the right stuff for the right price...and market it at the right place...
we often got a hot product but we neglect the marketing side..
like where will we sell it (what venues?). at what price and who are the customers...

In other words, learn and apply the basic marketing mix concept.

sakto, talga nmang mas maganda and buy and sell eh. you can always dictate the price basta ba sigurado ka sa market and supply and demand concept.
