View Full Version : Do you wear sunblock when going out?
farfalla

A friend of mine couldn't stress how essential it was to wear sunblock when going out of the house; kahit ilang minutes ka lang daw under the sun is damaging to your skin already. The harmful rays of the sun, (especially here in Manila) causes discoloration to the skin, especially to the face.
Can anyone recommend a good sunblock for the body, especially for the face? i've heard about Neutrogena and The Body Shop, but i don't wanna try anything unless i've gotten feedbacks from people....thanx!!! :)

I tried Neutrogena, the Fine Fairness Essence moisturizer with SPF 30. I had break-outs. Maybe it just didn't suit my skin. I'm now using Nivea Tinted Moisturizer in Ivory. Pero since 2nd day ko pa lang, I can't say if it works.

I never leave home without slathering myself with sunblock. Kahit face lang pag nagmamadali. Although ang nangyayari tuloy, iba color ng face and neck ko sa arms ko. :beam:
I've tried different brands for the face and body. Clinique sucks! Kahit na oil free, after 5 minutes todo nag ooil na! ]
Lancome is the best! Very expensive but super effective! I use the one with the highest spf. For summer yan. During rainy season, I use naman Lancome's vinefit moisturizer and spf 15 in one.

Clinique does a good job for me. I like the fact that its "light" on my face as oppose to other sunscreens out in the market that is gloggy and heavy. Maybe it aint compatible to your skin type?
N.B. Apply the sunscreen 15 mins before you go outdoors.

I read sumwhere that one shld use a sunblock with at least an SPF 20 for it to be effective and should be applied 20 mins. before you head out of the house. I do use NIVEA MOISTURIZING SUNBLOCK LOTION spf 20 for sometime now kaya lang I dont like the sticky feeling that I get after I slather it on my skin. Is Origins HAVE A NICE DAY MOISTURIZER has that kind of feeling too? Kasi if not Ill try to get one kasi proven naman ang Origins products in the market..... :)

I use Biotherm moisturizer with SP5 15 for everyday use. I use it all the time even in the fall because when you're on the pill you're prone to hyperpigmentation...

I have Origins' Have A Nice Day. I bought it in Rustan's Makati around December last year, it cost me P1,700 ++ for one small jar.
It's effective though, and it has a yummy citrus scent, enough to perk you up in the mornings.

More likely that's the reason. But I use sunblock 30 mins before I go out. And yet natutunaw pa rin. So as far as I'm concerned, it sucks. And lancome is waaayy better.

I really cannot find a good facial sunblock kaya the only choice I have is to put on facepowder with SPF. PEro my derma recommends Neutrogena kse safe daw yun.

Dermatologists recommend in using SPF15 sunblocks. ANything above that will clog the pores of the skin and inhibit its "breathing". In heavy activities which involve a lot of sweating, it is best recommended to re-apply 2-3 hours after to maintain its protective properties

Yun ba yung Nivea SunSpray SPF20? I think you can buy some sa PCX stores and it costs around 120++ bucks ata, but i'm npt so sure. :D

Ang coppertone kse amoy chlorine e kaya ayaw ko. I have to admit magganda ang sunblock na nabibili sa mga PCX stores yung sa mga tiangge. Basta dpat oil free ang sunblock to prevent break outs. Magagnda din ang products ng Hawaiian Tropics.

i have yung neutrogena....pero i dont use it every day kasi medyo matapang sya....i really dont think na its for everyday use.
i also have oil of olay complete....pero medyo mabigat yung feeling afterwards tsaka hindi sya oil-free....kaya hindi ko sya gustong gamitin.
i use clean n clear oil free moisturizer everyday...that's the only moisturizer na works for me...hindi mabigat yung feeling tsaka helps prevents pimple....pero walang syang SPF....hope they come up with an SPF...but until wala pa, i better start looking for a good facepowder na may SPF , the thing is i already like the one i'm using now, pero *** rin SPF....magpapayong na lang ako!!! jk :glee:

Isn't it generally recommended to use atleast spf 15 and above. And, above would be better. Perhaps it all depends on the quality of the sunblock used. I use spf 50. No breakouts from od of spf yet. Only from pms. :D

I just bought Shiseido Ultralight Sunblock Lotion (SPF 30). It's not heavy cream and it has the consistency of water so you don't really oil up much, and since it's not thick, your face doesn't get white because of the sunscreen ingredient in it. A bit pricey but worth it.

You can try the new Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock , which is available in SPF 30 and SPF 45. It is truly not greasy! I use the one with SPF45 and mix it with my moisturizer before applying face powder and surprisingly, the combination also works as a good make-up base.

hey car, musta na?
spectraban spf19 is available at mercury.
i read an article, says there that what is more important than the spf number is the application. pwede na raw spf15 kse it provides 95% protection while spf30 provides 98% protection. little difference lang. in applying the sunblock, apply it thickly or apply twice para di talaga maka-penetrate uv rays.
hope this helps.

heymikey:
I think one of the main ingredients of this sunblock is Parsol and I read somewhere that Parsol is a bit harsh on sensitive skin, hence it may cause breakouts in some people. I guess you really have to try it for yourself. I've tried the Neutrogena Dry Touch Sunblock and it's really super dry touch nga... the problem is, it made me break out. When I switched sunblocks my face cleared up. I tried this 2x to make sure this was the culprit. So if you think you stand a good chance, go ahead and try it out, I've seen different reviews on the net and i think the probability of breaking out really depends on your own individual skin type :) Hope this helped!!!:)

Yeah, I think I am going with a stick formula for my face. I've surfed the net and checked out what is available in Metro Manila - from pinaka low end to pinaka high end products.
Based on my reserach and reading labels, only stick variants are truly oil free. Not unless its indicated there already. I am torn between getting Coppertone's stick vs Hawaiian Tropic's stick.
But Coppertione has more acne/pimple fighting ingredients like Benzoic Acid/Benzoyl. But H.T. has 70 spf.
H.T. also has an oil free formula in liguid form by the way.

Hi Guys!
Finally. I've got the answer.
Based on my consultation with two dermatologists, the sunblock that's good for my skin - which is pimple prone and oily - is Sun Stop.
The only problem is you'll have to order it in advance and it takes a week daw. But I don't have time to wait for it to arrive coz I am already leaving this weekend.
I've searched Makati and Mega Mall and other drugstores, but I really can't find it.
So, I am using the the second best alternative that one of the dermas recommended - Spectraban. This is by Stiefel. It's not totally oil free, but its good. And I personally believe in Stiefel products.
I already got it in SPF 28 at Mercury Drug, 150 ml is P600+
So yun. I know better next time. But if you guys know were I can get Sun Stop before the week ends, please post it.
Thanks in advance. And I'll let you guys know when I come back if Spectraban is good as well.

Some makeups have spf on them. 2 things achieved on one pass: make up, and sun protection.
Go for gel-based sunblocks if you have an oily skin. Cream if you have dry. As for combination, I'm not sure.

jani_inpink
Mar 5, 2005, 11:04 PM
the whole point of sunblock is preventing your skin to be burnt by the sun. so there is no such thing. its either you get tanning oil or sunblock. if you want a safer alternative, get fake tan or go to a solarium (aka cancer in a box), if one exists in the phils.
a good sunblock pala is Garnier Ambre Solaire's Ultra Block Hydrating Cream, pero not sure if you guys have that over there. Siguro meron naman.

For daily use, you need a minimum of SPF15. And do not be fooled by ads claiming that the higher the SPF, the better. SPF is a measure of protection ONLY against UVB rays, the ones responsible for sunburn and darkening. Sunburn is not really a concern in our day-to-day activities so why splurge on very high SPF sunscreen product which you do not really need? In fact, the USFDA has declared that there is not much difference in benefit to users between sunscreens of SPF30 and SF70, and claims beyond SPF50 is no longer allowed.
More important is to look for high level of UVA rays protection, measured by PA+, PA++, up to PA+++ ratings, with the 3 pluses giving the highest protection. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the dermis and cause premature skin aging, age spots, wrinkling, dryness, spider veins plus also skin darkening. These rays can affect you whether it's cloudy or sunny, whether you are out in the sun or just inside the house. It's the UVA rays that make using sunblock DAILY a must.
The damage done by UVA rays is cumulative and the skin remembers the number of times you left it exposed unprotected. These aging concerns may not show up at once but become bothersome as we reach the 30's and 40's. Now that you know the major cause, don't you think it's time you do something to protect your skin against UVA rays?
A really good sunscreen active that protects against UVA, UVB and even UVC rays (cause of skin cancer) is zinc oxide. It should be in high enough level (7% up) to be effective, as indicated by a pasty consistency of the sunblock. The microfine form of zinc oxide is often used in commercial sunblocks to avoid giving whitish coat to users. And zinc oxide gives matt finish, a desirable property, very much unlike chemical sunscreens which make skin look greasy.

Unlike my previous sunblock, it's matte and isn't greasy. It also doesn't feel "heavy" on the face. Only downside to it is that it has to be applied 30 minutes before going out. I usually put sunblock on 5 minutes before leaving.

Jun 27, 2005, 06:12 PM
The rule of thumb is to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out. This applies whatever brand of sunblock you are using. Well, it's not really a mortal sin to get exposed before the 30-minute guide, especially if your sun protection product is made of physical sunblock like zinc oxide, cuz these physical blocks work immediately upon application. But it's best to follow the 30-minute rule, to be on the safe side.

My derma gave me a special product from their clinic, I think they call it sun tint. I have to apply it 30 minutes before leaving the house and reapply every two hours (kung nasa labas ka all the time).
I actually conceded to using this after my derma showed me a brochure of the faces that have been scanned using UV light. They scared me like hell. Blots of dark patches all over the face.
I tried shiseido sun cream before. Mahal. hehe.
Sa beach I used to put on Tan amplifiers pa nga or the sun tan with low spf formulation (usually 4). But it's still good ol' Coppertone for me. Higher spf formulations this time. It's smell reminds me of my childhood experiences by the beach!

It's preventive so you don't get to see the benefits at once. But when you reach late 30's to early 40's, when the fine lines and age spots start to appear, then you would say, I should have used sunblock daily when I was younger.

Between the Face Cover and Face and Body Shield, I bought the Face and Body Shield SPF 60, maybe because the saleslady was convincing enough, hehe. And one factor that made me approved of it is that it has 7% zinc oxide, and the Face Cover has only 5%, thanks to firestorm for informing that it should be 7% enough.
But I still haven't tried it yet, I'm still finishing my Obagi sunblock. I hope the Armada is as good as Obagi in sun and artificial light protection, because my skin has become really sensitive since I started using the Obagi Nu-Derm system. And I hope it does absorbs well on the skin and the cream would not become too obvious.

Another thing, I'm still worried about the Armada's 'skin-lightening' function as it might interfere with the Obagi Clear that I'm using.
And is it okay and safe to wear spf 60 for daily use?

I highly recommend Godiva Green Tea sunblock SPF25 if you have oily skin. It gives you matte finish. Price is P220 for 60-g tube in Watson and Mercury drug.

I guess it's one of the most essential skin-care must have these days. I'm glad i've learned it earlier how important it is wearing sunscreens when going out into the sun. Skincode spf10 and L'oreal uv spf50 work just fine for me.

No, I don't wear sunblock. It's pretty messy and a sticky feeling. I like to tan as I am pretty fair skinned. My tan wears out easily.
When I play golf, I love basking in the sun, but when it gets too hot, I use an umbrella to prevent heat exhaustion. When I'm at the beach I apply sunblock lotion sparingly.
I am not being wreckless nor suicidal but Filipinos and most Malays are not prone to skin cancer compared to East Asians (Chinese, Japanese, Koreans) and Caucasians.

Just want to share that in the October(?) issue of Metro magazine (cover is Kris Aquino), the best sunblock in their Beauty Awards is Godiva Safe Sea SPF30. Their Beauty Awards, as expected, is dominated by foreign brands.

Godiva products are generally good! I would even go as far as saying it's as good as the more popular foreign brands! :)

At present, I'm a big fan of VMV Armada Face and Body Shield 60 (with titanium oxide and zinc oxide). It's not as greasy as the other brands I've tried (Neutrogena, Clinique, Skinceuticals, etc). Plus it's a Pinoy brand! It can be a bit more difficult to apply and blend but I found out that applying a light oil-free moisturizer prior makes a big difference.
I've been using sunblock for about 4 years now and I regret that I didn't start sooner (like 10 years ago or even 15 years ago as I'm now 35). Now, I cannot go out of the house without it. Not even when just going to the neighborhood store.

Oh by the way look for the following ingredients when shopping for a brand: avobenzone, titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide. Reapplying frequently (like every 3 hours or more frequently) is also a good idea. Especially also if you sweat it off.

Yes, it’s fine. Just apply powder that’s hypoallergenic. It looks and feels like a foundation. So any ordinary loose powder will do.
FYI lang po, I resell their items.

The US FDA allows labeling of sunscreen products up to SPF30 only and any claims exceeding that can be labeled SPF30+ only. The agency made the move to rationalize marketing hypes and myths peddled by sunblock manufacturers. There is only marginal increase in sun protection beyond SPF 30, not worth the extra cost being charged to consumers.

To those interested, this is what it says on the label: VMV Armada SPF Sport 70 - Full-Spectrum Sun and Light Screen. For Face and Body. Active Use.
At 6.0 oz (185g), this is relatively big compared to imported facial sunblocks like awake and Clarins. Better value too. (P1, 119 or thereabouts at Watson's)
I used this sunblock in Bora a few weeks ago and I'm really happy with the results! I had a nice, unburnt, healthy-looking tan. I also liked the fact that it is odorless (I don't really like the scent of Coppertone and Hawaiian Tropic. )
VMV has other sunblocks available, including a much smaller facial sunblock with whitening elements at P499.

That is exacly what I have been saying. But it appears most of us get carried away by the sales pitches of sunblock manufacturers. We still believe that the higher the SPF, the better. Which is a myth. The US Food and Drug Administration na nga ang nagsasabi na huwag tayong padadala sa mga false promotional releases, ayan pa rin tayo.

i personally use neutrogena fine fairness essence.
for really oily skin and don't want the sticky feeling of sunblocks...the ultimate non greasy is SPECTRABAN...the one for the face okay. but a bit expensive. can be purchased in mercury drug. this is dermatologist prescribed. i don't buy it kasi i find it expensive eh. haha. but i tried it. it's good...really not sticky.
with neutrogena...it acts as a moisturizer and a sunblock...so it's good.
innoblock is another sunblock recommended by dermatologists.
yes and vmv armada too is recommended by dermatologists.

For a daily facial sunblock that doesn't feel like you're wearing any... i.e. non-greasy, non-sticky... check out L'Oreal White Perfect Deep Whitening Moisturizer SPF-15. It is for daily use, so it's not really SPF-30 or above.
You need a stronger sunscreen if you are going to the beach or staying out in the sun for a long time, but for daily use, this one is great, and it is primarily a whitening moisturizer that not only hydrates skin all day long, but reduces those dark spots and stuff.
Lest I start sounding like a L'Oreal salesman, I'll stop here. :)

The agency made the move to rationalize marketing hypes and myths peddled by sunblock manufacturers. There is only marginal increase in sun protection beyond SPF 30, not worth the extra cost being charged to consumers.
In addition to this, the FDA issued a circular stating that all sunblock manufacturers are given until 2010 to sell all their stocks of products with SPF higher than 30. SPF 30 is more than sufficient, what is more important is how much sunblock you applied onto the skin.
Best that i've ever tried is skinceuticals sunblock. fragrance free, non irritating, and does not make you sweat like a horse.

Someone asked the price for clinique citiblock, if I'm not mistaken, it is around 650 to 750

The best and safest sunblocks are those that contain physical sunblocks such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Different regions in the world ban the use of certain chemical sunblocks so i guess there must be something to it (that is, even with the allowable limitations set). In general, chemical sunblocks are more irritating to the skin than physical ones. again, to echo firestorm, please don't be led on by higher SPFs. The most important factor to SPF is how much of the product and how often you apply it onto the skin. If you read the labels, most recommend repeated application every two hours. That's the logic behind it.
Another thing, I'm still worried about the Armada's 'skin-lightening' function as it might interfere with the Obagi Clear that I'm using.
And is it okay and safe to wear spf 60 for daily use?
The "skin-lightening" function of ANY sunblock is the fact that it repels (physical sunblocks) or absorbs (chemical sunblocks) light. Therefore, the different UV rays that cause the darkening and "burning" of skin is hindered. When skin is protected, the production of melanin (where over-production causes melasma or "pekas") slows down hence skin lightens. It is always best to ask your doctor (MD) or dermatologist (MD) (who i assume prescribed Obagi in the first place) if you have such concerns. they are in the best position to respond to these issues.:) Btw, most dermatologists believe that the use of sunblocks is the single most important step that anyone can take to slow down the skin's aging process.;)
