Scientifically, smoking doesn't relieve stress. It's just psychological. Aside from giving you cancer, it gives you a host of other illnesses that have proven to be fatal, if not critical.

However, I just like the feeling of a good smoke, especially after a heavy meal. Parang ang sarap lang ng feeling, parang nawawala ang kabusugan.

I smoke because I'm addicted to the HABIT... :D :D :D

But i mean what do you get? For pleasure lang?

I've been a smoker since I was 15 years old. I'm turning 25 in two weeks, so that means I would have been smoking for 10 years.

Why did I start smoking? I don't really know. At that time, my parents have long quit the habit and aside from an older brother, our home was smoke-free. My friends at that time didn't smoke either. But I wanted to learn. Why? I don't know.

My first cigarette induced a coughing fit. I didn't like it. Still, I promised myself I'd learn to smoke. Sure enough, I did. And I've been smoking ever since.

I now smoke over a pack and a half a day.

After smoking for 10 years, I'd be lying if I told you that my body is not experiencing some deterioration. Smoking has cut my wind and has decreased my stamina. A former athlete, I can now only swim 5 laps continuously because I find it hard to catch my breath. I also cough violently in the morning (smoker's cough). I am also more susceptible to colds; and smoking has worsened my allergies.

So what do I get out of it?

Imagine these scenarios:

a) A really tough day at work. Tons of paperwork. Back-breaking client calls. You catch a cold beer at the bar before you go home. A cigarette in hand. Each puff of the cigarette calming you as you unwind after such a hectic day.

b) Sitting down on the beach, watching the sea. Sun blazing down on you in its full glory. You bring a cigarette to your lips and exhale. Simple pleasures of a simple yet good life.

c) A cup of coffee and a cigarette. Pure bliss.

BUT WHY DOES SMOKING FEEL SO GOOD TO US SMOKERS?

Scientific explanation:

We're addicts. Nicotine has warped our brain.
When we go for hours without smoking, we undergo slight
withdrawal symptoms. Most of them hardly noticeable.
What we smokers perceive as pleasure is actually RELIEF.

To smoke or not to smoke? I'd advise you not to.
As for me, I'll probably quit smoking someday... I hope.

As someone once said... "It's easy to quit smoking, I've done it a hundred times."

Smoking is a habit that affects the whole spectrum of society. More so, it is an addiction that causes serious health problems not just to the smokers but to the so-called passive smokers. The quiet epidemic of cigarette smoking is the main cause of avoidable disease and remains the single most important preventable cause of death in our society (World Health Organization WHO, 1990). Dr. George Alleyne, Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), reports that tobacco causes more deaths than AIDS, alcohol and drug abuse, traffic accidents, and violence combined in the Region of Americas. 10 million people will die in the world from tobacco related causes by the year 2030 if the current trends are not reversed (PAHO, 2002).
Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), has both short term effects such as eye irritation, coughing, headaches, reduced lung function in asthmatic non smokers, reduced attentiveness and problem solving ability and increased agitation and long term effects like lung cancer, pneumonia, increased risk of lung damage in non, smokers, increased serious respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia in children whose parents are smokers, slower lung growth and poorer lung function in young children whose parents smoke and coronary heart disease.

To top it all off, have a look at this alarming fact:
Tobacco smoke contains up to 4000 chemicals including these poisons
Hydrogen Cyanide (Poison in Gas Chambers)

Ammonia (Floor Cleaner)

Napthalene (Mothballs)

Phenol (Paints)

Bonzo(a)pyrene*

Cadmium
(Car Batteries)

Acetone (Paint Stripper)

Carbon Monoxide (Car Exhaust)

Methanol (Rocket Fuel)

Butane (Lighter Fuel)

Toluene (Industrial Solvent)

Urethane*

Vinyl Chloride*

Napthylamine*

Polonium-210*

*Known cancer causing substances

Now you still feel like havin a puff?

Ah, the who-gives-a-crap excuse. True, we all die. Death is inevitable, but wouldn't you want to live your life to the fullest and die in your sleep, as opposed to slipping away little by little in some intensive care unit? Well, if you guys want to smoke, it's fine by me. It's your body anyway, just don't expose your kids to second-hand smoke, it isn't fair to them. One of the reasons why I think alot of people smoke here in the Philippines is because it's so easy to purchase, even a 12 year old can buy a pack.

I used to be a smoker.. I quit due to the following reasons:

1. I developed an asthma.:( The attacks really suck BIG time! I also read an article that if you have an asthma and you smoke.. there's a BIG BIG chance that it'll eventually lead to serious heart ailments.

2. It has a fast aging effect in skin and hair.

I don't know about you, but I sure don't want to be diagnosed as having asthma at age 25, impotence at age 30, premature ageing at 32, lung cancer at age 35 and die at 40. I respect those who smoke, but bear in mind that there are people out there who cannot and will not tolerate passive smoking. So just be considerate the next time you take a light and think of a child that may contract emphesima as you blow your poison filled smoke to his/her face.

RIGHT ON! It's been long overdue for our government to implement policies that will help contain the hazards of smoking amongs its people. Policies such as. SMOKE FREE WORKPLACES, should be implemented like those that are already in place in Australia. Workers can still smoke in their own time, but it must be done outside at a designated smoking area. Breach to this attracts heavy penalties on the individual and the enterprise.
Another problem is the leniency of the phil government to the Tobacco giants' representation in the country. Its strength is very much apparent from the deluge of marketing campaigns enticing, not only certain target markets, but the whole of Philippine Society, irrespective of their age and income. In a lot of developed nations, governments have had a proactive role in minimising its control and influence on people by calling for a total ban of tobacco related advertisements in free to air TV, Cable TV and print. In addition to this, legislations have been put in place reprimanding and fining tobacconists if they are caught selling cigarettes to minors.
We can yap on and list possible remedies to this dire issue, but I believe that the efficacy, success and longevity of anti-smoking policies in the Phils can only be sustained if cronyism and government corruption are tamed.
It is,indeed, time for FILIPINOS to unite and demand for a better quality of life!

It's one of my favorite things in the world and I don't know when I'll kick the habit. The only good thing is, I do it in moderation.

I quit quitting.

I smoked for 7 years until I got pregnant last year. I must admit that it's a great stress-reliever especially when you're going number 2 in the bathroom :p BUT on the whole, I will have to say, not to smoke.

I felt so much better and healthier after quitting smoking. My breath smells better and my endurance picked up too. :)

Recently I had to shell out, more or less, half of the expenses for my dad's heart operation (at Heart Center in Pinas) due to a clogged valve caused by smoking. Cost: $10,000. That's more than half a million in pesos or more than 6 months of mortgage payments for the house I just bought no more than a year ago. Not very easy to come by nor to put up. Think about that the next time you light up a butt. As for my dad, he survived the ordeal, but he's done with smoking.

i guess it's a psychological addiction for me. Bring me to a bar on a saturday night, my hands suddenly get giddy wishing i were consuming hits of nicotene. However, I can survive the rest of MONTH without cigarettes.

pero in fairness...it is a stress buster

not to smoke.

i have also tried to talk to my smoker friends about the consequences (maybe to try to convince em to stop)..of course theyre more than aware of those health risks, but they still go on. i dont care that much anyway...it's their choice to stick with the habit.

me ive tried and i used to enjoy smoking when i was a kid (ard 9-10 yrs old) but when my dad found out he promised he'd make me smoke a whole ream, i stopped since then. though ive also sneaked in a couple of cigarettes in the house before (my mom's not in the house..i got disgusted with the way i smell afterwards...i smell awful..i hate the smoke odor stickin to my hair..ewww)
